Sam Amick of the Bee, David Aldridge of NBA.com/TNT, Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo!, Marc Stein of ESPN.
All of the incoming players but Nocioni expire this summer.
Nocioni makes $7.5 million next year, $6.8 million in 2010-11, and $6.65 million in 2011-12.
Net cap movement for the Kings: +$3.2 million this season, -$10.2 million next season, +$1 million in 2010-11, and +$6.6 million in 2011-12.
With this deal alone, the Kings can potentially make a play for a $10 million free agent this summer, depending on Mikki Moore et al.
UPDATE: The Kings will need to waive two current players to make room for these new fellows (even if they turn around and waive two new fellows). Sam Cassell would be Option #1 ... Quincy Douby?

march into expansionism continues
shaqawokeez called it
fire_voisin - February 18, 2009
We're marching into the D League
What FA will we take a stab at? Boozer or Lee? Would the want to come to our horrific team? Who would they start over? Thompson?
discocricket - February 18, 2009
Mmmm...
We are going to be bad for a while, but a lot will depend on the ping-pong balls. If we get the #1 or #2, pair that up with Thompson, Martin and Hawes, and you at least have a nice young core.
Ok, I’m reaching here, but I think the next two years are going to require an exceptional amount of optimism.
otis29 - February 18, 2009
You were going to have that anyway
this trade just extends salary cap hell for longer.
ForThree - February 18, 2009
Exactly
discocricket - February 18, 2009
Remember
Nocioni is +$6.6 in his final year when he will be an expiring. That will make him tradeable then so it’s really only a problem in the 2010-11 year

that's

shadow1480 - February 18, 2009
This is so gay.
Noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!
Aykis16 - February 18, 2009
If I understand this correctly
You could look at this as trading Miller for expirings, and Salmons for Nocioni. More comprehensible this way.
sactown - February 18, 2009
That's all well and good...
but it’s still shitty.
towndunce - February 18, 2009
That's how I'm looking at it
Which makes it ludicrous. Net negative value for our best asset. Awesome move Petrie.
discocricket - February 18, 2009
More like we had to
trade Salmons for Nocioni to get someone to take Miller off our hands. That’s ugly.
Kfan in Korea - February 18, 2009
And stupid
Wouldn’t Miller have become a better valued asset next season when he’s expiring? Weren’t we under the tax anyway with the SAR retirement?
discocricket - February 18, 2009
cost savings
pure cost savings.
Unless Pookie’s guestimate that Miller was becoming a serious locker room problem is more true than I thought.
Kfan in Korea - February 18, 2009
Clearly so
I hope those $6000 Carl’s Jr. meals taste good.
discocricket - February 18, 2009
Note
that comprehensible doesn’t mean commendable – I think this trade is a poor one. I’d rather trade Salmons for a pick+expiring, or trade Miller for expiring. If neither were possible, then I’d keep them both.
sactown - February 18, 2009
I'll say it again:
shit.
I mean it…shit.

shadow1480 - February 18, 2009
I wish I had Geoff's cell phone number.
I’d really just like to know what the plan is. After watching the rebuild in Portland and what’s going on in OKC, it seems to me that picks and young guys are the way to go. Crappy teams in small markets, regardless of how much money they have, seem to stay crappy teams.
Come on Geoff, give me a call! I need comfort.

Bad Trade once again
Once again, us fans are disappointed near the trading deadline. I never know why I, along with many others on this board always hope for something positive around this time of year. It never happens. I would have loved to see Miller and Salmons shipped in separate deals. The few past draft picks and signing Kevin to an extension, are the only, and i mean ONLY TWO things the front office has done positive.everything else, GARBAGE
David24 - February 18, 2009

he’s not going to report, so there’s still one spot left. got rid of 2, got three. now we got 15 guys (once they waive Cassell.)
shadow1480 - February 18, 2009
If TZ's trade to the wizards happens I will tip my hat to petrie,
but right now I just don’t understand how this all happened, I mean salmons to OKC for an expiring and a pick is better than this.
I hate to jump on the pookey “maloofs are controlling the personnel decisions” but I really cannot understand this any other way.

I’m not happy about that, but I think we’ll be surprisingly better with these two guys.

Bluejohn - February 18, 2009
Men
You think he could at least have gotten a draft pick out of them. Nocioni is the same age as Salmons and makes about the same money. Doesn’t really address a need aside from the hole created by Salmons leaving or eve make the team better or worse, really. With Diogu and Gooden coming in, is there a deal involving Mikki out there?
Also, Kenny Natt deserves to get booted in the ass if he starts Gooden.

lifestyleforthesellout - February 18, 2009

otis29 - February 18, 2009
You don't think the clear
cost saving motivated deals over the last couple of days would indicate a directive from the ownership?
The Maloof/Petrie management group takes a serious hit on this one though.
Kfan in Korea - February 18, 2009
This ESPN comment made me feel a little better....only a little though
“Simmons also has an expiring contract, so the Kings basically traded the salaries of Miller and Salmons for Nocioni’s.”
Kusian - February 18, 2009
It's possible
I mean that’s the best case scenario. Worst case, he’s turning into Isaiah and no one has caught it yet.
discocricket - February 18, 2009
It's even a question?
Although I wonder if he was pressured by Maloofs to cut costs now at the expense of eating Nocioni’s deal later (shades of the Webber deal, and we all know how that ended up).

shadow1480 - February 18, 2009

MITCH FRONTAGE - February 18, 2009
This is
exactly how I feel right now
Ultrakingsfan - February 18, 2009
This is a great move
We have TONS of expiring contracts that come off the cap. I cannot believe how good this trade is I think it is indescribable. Cost savings may also help keep the team in Sacramento as well. This trade is not in a vacuum it solves lots of problems. Look at what comes off the cap after this season:
Bobby Brown – $0.44 Million
Sam Cassell – 0.80 Million
Bobby Jackson – 6.49 Million
Shelden Williams – 3.40 Million
Ike Diogu – 2.9 Million
Drew Gooden – 7.1 Million
Cedric Simmons – 1.7 Million
If we have none of those players back that is $24.25 Million off of the payroll. If we waive Mikki Moore we save approx 3 Million more. Nocioni’s contract goes down a small amount for the next two years and then back up in a team option year that we would only excercise if we used him in a trade in the offseason of 2012.
Remember we can be used in unuqual trades since we are below that salary cap. We can take on a fat salary and future first rounders in the offseason for the Wizards or Cavaliers or any team. Cap space leads to TONS of options especially in the hands of Petrie and the Kings. The players we received are almost irrelevant.
mayfieldcol - February 18, 2009
Are you the Maloof's accountant?
batso - February 18, 2009
I am an accountant!
In no way affiliated with the Maloofs. We were under the cap which is why we traded Diogu’s 2.9 Million for Ruffin’s small salary.
mayfieldcol - February 18, 2009
Facetious comment
No offense – i guess the only way this makes sense is from a straight up numbers perspective.
batso - February 18, 2009
My Bosses...
who are also accountants really like this trade, too! It must be a numbers or money thing. they even gave me the company tickets to tonights game!
mayfieldcol - February 18, 2009
That's exactly why it does make sense
Petrie’s not concerned what a few overzealous fans think now. It’s about the long haul.
kangsfan - February 18, 2009
Overzealous or not
I like the game of basketball more than the business – shortsighted? So be it.
batso - February 18, 2009

mayfieldcol - February 18, 2009
Yeeees it does
2.9 for .7 + 1 Mil
lietothegirls - February 18, 2009
You have to pro-rate the saleries for the rest of the year
I don’t know how salaries are paid out in the NBA, but if it is based on games played, Portland has played 52 out of 82 games. Based on team payout during the season, Diogu is owed approximately $1.06 million, which is just $60k over what they are paying us based on the one mil stated by you. Maybe this trade gives Portland some cap relief, but I am making some assumptions, so does anyone know how player pay is scheduled?
hokiehess - February 18, 2009

Kfan in Korea - February 18, 2009

salary addition needs to be 1.9m according to Trade Machine.

Kfan in Korea - February 18, 2009
But...
we could have saved as much with the Nets deal, without taking on the bad contract, plus we’d have gotten a young prospect in Ryan Anderson
vfettke - February 18, 2009
Problem is
We don’t know if that offer was legitimately on the table. This is always the frustration with the post-trade analysis, we never do find out if these other deals were tangible or not.
otis29 - February 18, 2009
If that deal was real
we have no idea who floated that rumor
Kfan in Korea - February 18, 2009
I rec it
The only optimistic post. I like it. I’m with you.
ZenBaller - February 18, 2009
Optimistic
But the bottom line is we traded probably our best chip (in Salmons) for very little talent in return. With Salmons, you would have hoped to get a draft pick back at the very least.
otis29 - February 18, 2009
Bottom line
Salmons was not part of the future.
Ooops, now I have to rationalize that Nocioni is.
I think it was the price to dump Brad for the expirings.
The good: Nocioni shoots 38% from 3.
The bad: Nocioni shoots 41% overall.
Almost half his shots are threes. Maybe a change of scenery turns him into the second coming of Peja.
coolcatreportdotcom - February 18, 2009
Nocioni is also the same age as Salmons.
Carl - February 18, 2009
Nocioni's contract is more money and a year longer than Salmons.
MITCH FRONTAGE - February 18, 2009
but he can come off the bench
if need be.
Kfan in Korea - February 18, 2009
I think we could have done better trading Salmons seperately.
The OKC deal would have been better than getting another bad contract. Even if Nocioni helps a little I still think it sucks.
MITCH FRONTAGE - February 18, 2009
I'm not happy about taking on Nocioni
but I’m going with the idea that these cost cutting measures are required to keep the Kings in Sactown.
Kfan in Korea - February 18, 2009
Obviously it was all for cost cutting.
But I still don’t have to like it. lol
MITCH FRONTAGE - February 18, 2009
Fair point
otis29 - February 18, 2009
How sad
If that’s what this has come to
batso - February 18, 2009
sorry, but
If we have to play the game handicapped because the Maloofs are too cheap to compete, they can go to hell and move the team.
The Family got their play toy, the play toy comes with ongoing expenses these extremely wealthy people were aware of and can afford. There’s no reason they can’t at least play within the rules. I’m not saying they need to be NYK or Portland, but all this consternation about the poor Maloofs makes me ill.
ForThree - February 18, 2009
LOL
You’d be different, I’m sure.
otis29 - February 18, 2009
I won’t ever be in danger of having the Maloofs financial “Problems” lol.
ForThree - February 18, 2009
Nor I
I understand there is a financial side to this, and don’t decry the Maloofs for cutting costs…that’s the reality of doing business, play toy or not.
Fact is, Sacramento might not be the best town for an NBA team, especially in a recessed economy. I think we all may need to deal with that fact…
otis29 - February 18, 2009
Does that make ForThree's point unreasonable?
I mean, if they can’t swing it, sell the team.
discocricket - February 18, 2009
I think so
We are really in unprecedented financial times, at least in our history. The Maloofs aren’t the only ownership that’s looking to cut costs right now.
Do you really think there’s a market out there to buy an NBA team right now?
Reality is, they may be cutting costs in an effort to keep this team in Sacramento, rather than take the money that could be awaiting them in another city. If that’s the case, I’d feel pretty shitty villifying them.
I’m still on the “wait and see” bandwagon. Will there be another move? Will the team go after a free agent with the space they’ve created for next season, or will that money be sat upon? Those questions need to be answered before telling the Maloofs to “go to hell and move their team”.
otis29 - February 18, 2009
I think your altruism in their motives is potentially naive
(Kfan in Korea skip this post) :)
They could be cutting costs because they have the cover to do so.
I don’t think there’s any correlation between whether the Maloofs move the team and them saving a few million in the short run and them moving the team.
They’ll move the team when they have a deal that is good enough for them to give up whatever amount of equity you think they have built up in Sacramento. The money gained or lost in the meantime isn’t relevant to the decision.
ForThree - February 18, 2009
We shall see
I don’t necessarily see them as altruistic, but I think the idea that these guys should treat their businesses like playtoys is equally laughable.
I’ve never had a problem with the Maloofs (or other sports team owners) running their business like a business.
And it’s not like they’ve been sitting under the salary cap every year right? If they don’t go out and spend the money they’ve cleared off the cap, then you can bitch that they are cheapskates.
If that money does get spent, you might want to point your vitriol at the GM.
otis29 - February 18, 2009
true
I’ve not had any issue with the Maloofs as owners except when they’ve (theoretically) made basketball decisions. I have nothing bad to say about the Maloofs to date.
I just have a problem with…the Kings are staying in Sac because of this trade…that’s not reasonable, imo.
ForThree - February 18, 2009
While there may be some truth to that
Sac has been a good place financially in the past, if saving money in the short term bridges the team until those financial times are a reality again, then that’s a good thing.
Kfan in Korea - February 18, 2009
Its hard to justify the current payroll by wins...
lietothegirls - February 18, 2009
It is impossible to justify current payroll by wins
no matter how you slice it.
mayfieldcol - February 18, 2009
No way...
With credit spreads through the roof, and virtually every bank in existence being over-leveraged and under-capitalized, I can’t see any way that the team could be sold. Only way that deal goes through is if its an equity swap (Someone offers Maloofs a shit-ton of stock in something for their ownership of the Kings) or if it’s an all-cash deal.
misterbrister - February 18, 2009
No consternation involved
but I’d be sad if the Kings left Sac and if believing that this move will help keep the team from moving allows me to better accept it, at least allow me my delusion.
Kfan in Korea - February 18, 2009
I’ll be quiet about the Maloofs finances then Kfan, out of respect for your naivity. :)
ForThree - February 18, 2009
Both good players
not shitbags…
lietothegirls - February 18, 2009
That's great
Wanna bet we don’t acquire fat salary? This is a cost cut. So if we don’t, this is a bad deal. Even if we do, it depends on what we get.
discocricket - February 18, 2009
Rec'd
just for the fact that you’re so optimistic.
shadow1480 - February 18, 2009
You're missing the point
We are getting punished having to absorb Nocioni’s contract, which is a year longer than Salmons and slightly more money just to get rid of Miller one year earlier than he’d have left anyway.
Miller next year would actually have been an asset as a decent player with a giant expiring deal next year. All we got is we extended our crappy salary cap situation longer, on the hope Petrie can figure out something with slightly more cap space this summer than the MLE.
ForThree - February 18, 2009
+1
discocricket - February 18, 2009
something HAD to give
lietothegirls - February 18, 2009
That’s pretty much what I thought when I first read about the trade. Of course we got garbage in return. We’re looking for expiring salaries. Maybe we could’ve gotten more value, maybe not. We don’t really know what’s on the table. Maybe we could’ve gotten better, but this is by no means a bad deal.
This is not the Webber deal. That deal pretty much just split a long, large contract into three long, smaller contracts. This deal gives us immediate flexibility and we don’t have to wait for years for contracts to expire. Yes, we have to take on Nocioni but he’s the only long-term piece and it’s a sacrifice I’m willing to make.
I think all the Amare talk led us all to dream up something big when in reality those deals may not have been as feasible as initially thought. Compared to an Amare deal, this trade is a huge letdown, but ultimately what matters is what the Kings do with the flexibility. Only then can we really judge this trade.
jveezy - February 18, 2009
Funny thing
The peeps at Blog-a-Bull seem more excited about Brad Miller than John Salmons.
otis29 - February 18, 2009
He's played there before
back when he was young and gave a shit
vfettke - February 18, 2009
If not for the re-aquisition of BJax
This would be the official end of the Adelman-Kings era. Of course this has been upon us for some time, but moving BM52 makes it official. No hold overs because of extensions on our part.
tokyo - February 18, 2009
Nocioni usually steps up his production during playoffs, so… oh wait…
henryclemente - February 18, 2009
Lol
Aykis16 - February 18, 2009
Nocioni
He also averages 5 rebounds a game too and is willing to come off the bench. We took Diogu off Portland’s hands for $1 Million cash (after paying his salary Maloof net 640 grand or so) to lower their luxury tax bill and/or to aloow them some flexibility in future trades. This is way better tyhan the Chris Webber trade and we only said we loved that when it went down.
mayfieldcol - February 18, 2009
Actually this pretty much exactly like the Webber trade
Better financial situation in the short term, worse in the long term.
nbrans - February 18, 2009
Except Webber's contract was a huge liability
and Salmons/Miller were arguably assets
ForThree - February 18, 2009
How is it worse in the long term?
We have Nocioni for 2 years and then a team option we will never pick up. And the 2 years we have him for his salary goes down small amounts.
mayfieldcol - February 18, 2009
I think Nocioni is on the hook for three years after this one
Then there is a team option
otis29 - February 18, 2009
Otis is right.
moproblemz - February 18, 2009
He's a worse
and less valuable (in the trade market) player than Salmons.
discocricket - February 18, 2009
To be fair
I don’t think he’s worse than Salmons.
Salmons had a good year in NBA’s worst team. That’s no big achievement.
ZenBaller - February 18, 2009
Okay
I’ll disagree. Regardless, wasn’t Salmons more valuable than Noc as of today?
discocricket - February 18, 2009
Yes
I’m just not sure about the comparison. Nocioni is a good player, he might be more useful than Salmons.
ZenBaller - February 18, 2009
could be
Salmons wouldn’t do crap off the bench.
shadow1480 - February 18, 2009
Nocioni is also emotional
which I think we lack
lietothegirls - February 18, 2009
He also talks on defense
I think that’s the more important issue.
pookeyguru - February 18, 2009
He's bigger (don't care what the stats say)
rebounds better and is a 3 pt specialist
for what its worth
lietothegirls - February 18, 2009
Who's we?
I hated that trade when it happened, and it’s become a cancer that just won’t go away.
discocricket - February 18, 2009
Have this crossed anyone's mind?
Maybe we had no better offer for Salmons.
Joe Smith and Wilcox went to NO, Dallas seems indifferent, the Blazers are thinking about 1000 trades….
Maybe this one was the best deal available and it’s sure better than doing nothing.
ZenBaller - February 18, 2009
true
shadow1480 - February 18, 2009
I'm not convinced it's better than nothing
nbrans - February 18, 2009
its a hell of a lot worse than doing nothing in my opinion
ForThree - February 18, 2009
Why for Salmons?
discocricket - February 18, 2009
That's what I figured,
mentioned previously – if all Tyson Chandler was worth was a couple expirings, then I wasn’t surprised, really, about what we got.
Interesting to see if Cleaveland can turn Wally into anything.
iashwash - February 18, 2009
This is such a bad trade.................
such a bad trade, the kings better justify this somehow.
Ultrakingsfan - February 18, 2009
How
much longer does Salmons have on his contract?
shadow1480 - February 18, 2009
two years
MITCH FRONTAGE - February 18, 2009
Bulls Fan Here.
In my opinion this is a horrible trade for the Kings. Rew Gooden plats absolutely no D and will take more outside jumpers than your guards will. As for Noch I respect the effort he gives but he is a ballhog in the midst of his worst statistical season ever and don’t even get me started on the Albatross of a contract! I am not that excited about get B Miller due to the fact he plays a little to soft for my liking but John Salmons is a great addition who can get moved to the 3 behind Deng with either him or Heinrich coming of the bench 1st. Only + is Rew Gooden contract comes of the books next year.
Avrich - February 18, 2009
Take
it from us …. salmons is a completely different player off the bench. If you want John to play well, the Bulls better start him. and he LOVES to dribble. Loves it.
shadow1480 - February 18, 2009
Sound like Ben Gordon.
I think that why we pulled the trigger B.G is a unrestricted F.A. next year, this is a insurance policy.
Avrich - February 18, 2009
I noticed the excitement from Bulls fans and the complaining by us Kings fans.
That should tell us we got the bad deal.
MITCH FRONTAGE - February 18, 2009
not so quick ....
Here’s a nice comment from ESPN’s story ….
So rather than attempt to use Gooden and Noc in a deal that could land an actual difference-maker, they go after Brad Miller. Again.
That’s it. I give up on this team until someone in the front office shows they have a clue what they’re doing.
shadow1480 - February 18, 2009
You forget
Nocioni makes more than Salmons and has an extra year. That is the only real asset besides the cap space, depending if we use it or not. This summer will decide if this trade makes sense or not.
MITCH FRONTAGE - February 18, 2009
Even they spell it wrong!
DustyG - February 18, 2009
This trade doesn’t look as good as we hoped but I think it’s far worse for the Bulls.
I don’t know much about your cap, but I guess it’s close to full for the next couple of years and you’re no contenders.
ZenBaller - February 18, 2009
I think the bulls are another 2010 buyer which is Millers end year and get the extra year of Nocioni off the books.
MITCH FRONTAGE - February 18, 2009
Yea probably
But they won’t do much till then. And it’s a pity because they have a nice team. Plus they’ll have to resign the rookie contracts then.
ZenBaller - February 18, 2009
True, buts thats a long time from now.
MITCH FRONTAGE - February 18, 2009
We Know Were Not Contenders! Duh.
But Salmons and Miller come off the books 2010, just in time for that amazing Free Agent Class (Bosh, I hope). And check out Noch’s contract. It’s Ridiculous! And We really needed a big man upgrade over Aaron Gray. Besides we have the future aka D Rose.
Avrich - February 18, 2009
Salmons off 2011
MITCH FRONTAGE - February 18, 2009
How? They look to be in great position in 2010. Noc won’t supplant Deng, Gordon won’t resign cheap.
SeeingStars - February 18, 2009
brb, gotta wrap up this e-mail to Petrie
jeremy548 - February 18, 2009

Ultrakingsfan - February 18, 2009
Kings received tons of expiring contracts
No team wanted to give us a draft pick for Salmons or Miller much like I would not want to give a draft pick for the possible Amar’e trade scenarios. I doubt anyone we traded for will be on the Kings next year except for Nocioni.
mayfieldcol - February 18, 2009
Let's hope not
That would take it from bad to worse.
discocricket - February 18, 2009
Thats because we probably have a top three pick.
MITCH FRONTAGE - February 18, 2009
Yeah
Our pick will be great this year and the rockets will be about 23-25. We got that for Artest who is WORLDS better than Salmons.
mayfieldcol - February 18, 2009
We got much more than that for Artest
We got an expiring, Greene, and a pick.
discocricket - February 18, 2009

if the Kings get a good 10 mil a year FA like TZ said …. I think this is a good trade.

Bulls fan here...
I want to start out with an apology, I know it sucks to make bad trades. But really, this isnt as bad as it seems for you guys. You did give up a decent low post presence, but u got one back that does essentially the same exact thing. You also traded the future of your club (besides kevin of course) in john salmons but in return you got a guy who is going to come out a play his hardest every single night. Noc will probably be starting for you guys and with that role that hes never had im sure will come more responsibility, which he thrives on. Bulls got the better end of the deal talent wise, but its not that much to give up in exchange for some help with the wallet.
PS what is john salmons contract situation? expires in 11’?
rose23 - February 18, 2009
John was never the future of our club.
He’s old. You got sourpuss Brad though.
Anyway, you guys got the better deal. Congrats.
Aykis16 - February 18, 2009
No need to rub our noses in it.
We are screwed. Just make sure Vinny starts Salmons otherwise you’ll get nothing out of him.
moproblemz - February 18, 2009
it
expires in 2 years
shadow1480 - February 18, 2009
You've evidently not seen much of Miller or Salmons...
Miller is allergic to the low post. He’s a high post center, good shooter, very good passer, worthless defender, and only a good rebounder occasionally. He will complement Tyrus Thomas nicely.
Salmons is easily the best player in the trade, is 29 and you’ll be very pleasently surprised how much better he makes you.
ForThree - February 18, 2009
Salmons is the better player
but not if he comes off the bench. Otherwise – he does it all very well if any one thing excellently
lietothegirls - February 18, 2009
Low post presence?
Miller does not qualify as a low post presence. Thanks for the expiring contracts!
mayfieldcol - February 18, 2009
We gave up a decent low post presence?
I thought we traded Miller and Salmons – who did I miss?
section214 - February 18, 2009
Sam Cassel's Balls.
Aykis16 - February 18, 2009
He`s talking about our high post POINT CENTER !
hudson101 - February 18, 2009
why anyone would commit all that $$ to BThriller is crazy to me
I like our chances using that cash to come up with a more valuable piece.
Holmdel - February 18, 2009
I think most would agree
Question is who would we lure in with that money.
MITCH FRONTAGE - February 18, 2009
You should just be lucky we didnt give you Larry instead of Noc. And im sure Vinny wont start salmons, he doesnt seem to do many things correctly.
rose23 - February 18, 2009
I'm sure Petrie tried that and was rebuffed out of pity.
discocricket - February 18, 2009
At least Hughes expires in 2010
nbrans - February 18, 2009
I'd have done that in a heart beat
He expires next year, which means next year he’s a trade asset like Miller would be.
vfettke - February 18, 2009
This is not that bad of a deal
Just… Meh. Petrie obviously thinks highly of Niccioni and thinks he’s going to complement Shock and Hawes as the Kings frontcourt of the future. I just hope he’s right. (Nic can certainly rebound better than Salmons – which TZ has often noted is important for this team)
Now all we need is 2 decent guards – one of which will hopefully come in the draft.
thelettere - February 18, 2009
Short-term future at least
He’s kind of old to look too far ahead. Perhaps an acceptable stop-gap until the bigger plan gets finished.
thelettere - February 18, 2009
Yes it was the best deal available
“Sources say the Dallas Mavericks offered Jerry Stackhouse for Salmons, and the San Antonio Spurs were willing to part with Bruce Bowen and Ime Ukoda for him. Both Stackhouse and Bowen have partial guarantees for next season – $2 million each – that are cost prohibitive to Sacramento. League executives say the Kings preferred a straight expiring deal for Salmons before they found the Bulls’ deal.”
link
ZenBaller - February 18, 2009
That's for Salmons though
who we could have held onto for net decent value in his play.
discocricket - February 18, 2009
If this is true, the deal we got was better than what the deal Petrie was looking for.
Carl - February 18, 2009
I guess
you would rather have Larry, there is no talent for him to disrupt anyway.
rose23 - February 18, 2009
ESPN Note
The Chicago-Sacramento trade is likely to be finalized later Wednesday, but one source close to the process cautioned that the deal could still be expanded to include additional players.

lietothegirls - February 18, 2009
I'm just happy we didn't get Eduardo Najera
I fucking hate Eduardo Najera.
Furthermore, upon reading the Bulls Blog side of it, they all seem to agree on two things about Nocioni: he’s overpaid, but he’s got a damn lot of heart. I would contend that possibly more than anything what this team needs right now is heart. That may seem cheesy, but I think it’s reasonable to suggest that two of the team’s biggest weaknesses, rebounding and defense, might improve drastically simply by swapping players who mostly don’t give a crap for at least one with strong will and something to prove.
AnotherStupidSN - February 18, 2009
I like where your head's at
I was about to come down and post something similar to this. I think Garcia and Nocioni will get along, and that their passion for the game will help the rest of the team. I mean, not to mention, Nocioni is a team player: he’s going to play hard every night, and it’s going to make a difference.
Also, without any real proof, I suspect that without Salmons and Brad in the locker room, the team might be able to gel better than they have so far and finally start moving forward a little bit instead of sitting in an awkward holding pattern.
bartenpa - February 18, 2009
Good point
We shipped out the two moodiest guys on the team.
otis29 - February 18, 2009
Can't argue there.
Aykis16 - February 18, 2009
I've said it on about three threads now
but this team needs more emotion. Noce could be addition and make others better just on that
+ rebounds…
lietothegirls - February 18, 2009
For sure
I suspect your suspicions re: Garcia/Nocioni and Salmons/Brad/locker room are spot on. At least, that’s exactly what I’m hoping.
AnotherStupidSN - February 18, 2009
I agree
He’s dirty. Right when C-webb came back from surgery, Ed was blatantly trying to kick/trip/hit that leg. Asshole. Hate him.
avishai - February 18, 2009
Yeah
I was having a hard time remembering why I hate him so much, I just remember feeling like whenever he was on the court, everything was suddenly a lot less fun and a lot more “douchy”.
AnotherStupidSN - February 18, 2009
I think I blamed him for one of C-Webb's injuries
and those derailing our playoff chances. Hate that a-hole.
Aykis16 - February 18, 2009
We could use a little 'tough guy' actually
Noce does add some of that as well
lietothegirls - February 18, 2009
Yeah, that was totally a Cobra-Kai “Sweep the Leg” move by Najera.
LaBradford - February 18, 2009
Rec’d.
Carl - February 18, 2009
Shows you Just how ugly the League is in terms of Financials right now.
When millers big expiring is worth so little that we have to attach one of the most reasonable contracts in the association to get someone to take on salary for a year.
When Chandler goes to OKC for next to nothing just so the Hornets can get out from under his contract (and hey the guy produced and without him they are not even close to contenders anymore).
When the nets are talking about trading Vince Carter to the Spurs for basically cap filler.
When an absolute superstar in the league (I don’t love me some Amare but he got voted by fans to the starting team of the west, the guy fills arenas regardless of what we the blogging stratosphere think of his D) is available to all and sundry and the best offer by all reports is average players back + a little expiring?
The secret is out, there are a lot of franchises out there who have been caught sans pants with regards to the money markets.
Theres some awfully awfully shallow pocketed ownership groups out there right now, and I think there are going to be some exceptionally unhappy Free Agents this summer when the offers start pouring in.
Fiscal responsibility just slapped the kings in the face like so much cold fish.
I hate the trade, I hate it worse than taking my wife to see P.S I love you, however I think it is a sign of the times that we are going to have to get acclimatised to. If the maloofs green light Geoff to use that cap space this summer i’d be surprised.
Bushka - February 18, 2009
Honestly, I kind of hope they don't give Geoff the green light
…otherwise, how many shitty MLE’s can we get done for 10 mil? Is it too early to sign Mikki and Beno to extensions?

However, this works

I put in Hawes, cuz I really don’t want to part w/ JT. Also, If it is JT AND our 1st pick that PHX wants, they can go fudge themselves. Now, if we can get a pick from CHI or the Wiz, I wouldn’t mind giving it to them w/ Hawes and HOU’s pick.

We still have a bunch of expiring contracts even after making this deal so we still wind up under the cap next year. Hard to say what’s gonna happen though. I hope this is a precursor to another deal because the team as constituted after this trade doesn’t make any sense.

That is some funnie sheet !!
Miller did the best he could with what he had.. which wasnt much. John was a solid player who went out and earned his paycheck every game, which is more than you can say about Brad.
FaStRmAn - February 18, 2009
It should be noted -
Statistically, Miller is very similar to Vlade when comparing both of them as Kings.
Much different guys in what they contributed off the court, though. Vlade brought the glue, while Brad sniffed it (sorry, very cheap parting shot).
section214 - February 19, 2009

Andres Nocioni isn’t worth the money, and giving up Salmons to accomplish this doesn’t make sense. Make the Bulls take Kenny Thomas instead. This trade sucks.

It's not a terrible deal datl
My hope is that they think Nocioni is the type of player they can use off the bench, and provide the team with energy. I would much rather see Donte play with the starters, and Noc with the bench at this point.
I don’t really have a problem with the trade I guess. I’ll have a post on this when the valium & IB Profin wears off. I just had fillings & shit done, and I’m not feeling too hot. Especially when I’ve got a paper due on Friday. Truthfully, I think the Kings accomplished enough in this deal that it makes sense. If Noc helps fill the energy/rebounding/defense/can hit 3’s void this team needs help with, than I can live with this deal. I’ve seen worse. And the 10 million in cap relief definitely is something this team needed regardless. I’d give the trade a B.

once again
I agree with you, pookey.
No, it’s not a great deal, but the Kings didn’t have the pieces to go out and get a great deal. This is a pretty good deal, and when your team is as bad as the current one is, “pretty good” is a step forward.
I especially like the fact that Petrie added some guys who can play defense and rebound and play physical basketball. After we get a talent upgrade (post-draft and assuming a free agent addition) Nocioni could be a useful player off the bench.

Are we acquiring Spanish speakers
so that Rubio will have someone to talk to and can translate and tell him what play they’re running? ;-)

It's a well established trend in soccer
To acquire multiple players of similar cultural backgrounds to help foreigners settle better. Not saying they did it on purpose, just saying it might work.

Reality
This pretty much sums it up. None of the players in this deal are anything close to star material. So we dealt our crap for their crap. It’s nothing to get too excited or deflated about.
When you are 11-43, there are no bad trades. We really can’t get much worse.
We got rid of two guys who aren’t part of the future and added a little different wrinkle with Nocioni.
Do we really want to spend our time debating the relevant merits of Brad Miller vs. Drew Gooden?
I think the best thing is our young bigs don’t have Brad Miller looking over their shoulder anymore. No more Brad Ts and whining. No more Bad Brad.

The best thing about this trade is..
in a week we’ll have completely new stuff to bitch about rather than the same ole, same ole we’ve been bitching about so far this year.

In GP's defense
You don’t get to be a gm by being an idiot and we know Geoff doesn’t pull knee jerk reaction trades. Let’s face it, this was the best trade available. It just seems so disappointing because we were all expecting a big splash right away with all the rumors that were out there. But that’s the thing, rumors are just rumors. I find it hard to believe that Geoff had opportunities like sending K9 with Brad to Miami for Shawn Marion or trading Salmons+dump to the Blazers for expirings and didn’t do it (would have saved more money than this trade). The reality is that this trade yielded the most value compared to any other real opportunity that was out there otherwise GP would have done them instead.
Enough negatives have been posted already so Im just going to point out what I like about the trade. This trade doesn’t net an all-star right away but it will provide an opportunity to. I enjoy the fact that it saves about 10 mil? next year giving us a number of options (free agency/trade flexibility). Who knows, if we go under the cap next year, we might be able to save Phoenix some money and get Amare without losing JT/Hawes/lottery pick after all. Drew for Brad is a wash skills-wise but we don’t have to pay Drew next year if we don’t want to. Nocioni is not too bad to have around. I think he can compliment Kmart better than Salmons did. Can’t wait to see how irritated other teams become when Nocioni and Cisco are on the floor together.
Looking into next season, you still have young JT/Hawes who can only get better, Kmart, a high draft pick, financial flexibility, K9’s expiring contract that could yield something else and those are enough to keep me watching and hopeful. Patience is key and the future will vindicate present actions. GP, keep doing your thing.

Just Glad...
They finally got rid of Miller. Now when players go right up the middle and score, we can blame someone else.. or knock the guy on his arse… Nocioni doesn’t allow easy layups. Salmons was no big loss either. His jumper was pretty iffy, and when it wasnt going down, he was very predictable driving the lane for an offensive foul, a turnover, or a prayer. A SHOOTING guard in the NBA has to make SHOTS. The NBA is riddled with athletic 1.5 guards that can jump out of the GYM but cant consistently make a 15 footer.
I think that Gooden is a money deal only. His best days are WAY behind him. He can still play, but the Kings aren’t going to resign him. Not with the young promising power forward they already have. My hope is the Maloofs are gearing up to make a big splash next year with a Homerun Draft by “The Genius” Geoff Petrie, coupled with a Homerun Free Agent signing using all that money that the Maloofs have been claiming they were putting aside for the future. That is really the only way to resurrect this franchise and put Sacramento back on the NBA map. They haven’t been relevant since CWEBB heard a “POP”. Damn shame that was…
http://www.newsday.com/sports/ny-spknix0218,0,7002831.story
But After reading in the NY Times that the Maloofs were caught up in the Madoff scandal, I am afraid that the salary dumping might be motivated by financial fear more than by clever design. If that is the case, we are in for some youth basketball for several years to come. Kinda like AAU / Recreation League games, but they want you to pay 20 bucks just to park (WHAT? No wash and wax???) and 40 bones for a seat. That is really gonna be a hard sell. Yea, if the Maloofs try to go cheap on the fans, It ain’t going to be hard to figure it out. I have also read that a lot of teams are using the 2010 free agent free-for-all as a smoke screen excuse to dump salary and then hunker down and wait the recession out. So if the Kings do NOT spend the alleged windfall from all the REALLY bad trades (Bibby, Artest, Webber, and now Miller) that we got no talent in return for, then we will know how the Maloofs financial house is doing. Sure hope that gamboling hall they got in Vegas is doing well. One positive is the money the City wil save because there is no use building a New Arena for CRICKETS….
