Kings 98, Raptors 91: DeMarcus Cousins, Isaiah Thomas Put In Monster Nights In Sacramento's First Road Win

The Sacramento Kings earned their first road win of the season on Wednesday, beating the Toronto Raptors 98-91. The Kings had been 0-5 with an averaging losing margin of 23 points away from The Gymmer coming in, but a strong fourth quarter led Sactown to sweet victory.

DeMarcus Cousins had a monster night with 21 points and a career-high 19 rebounds. He started off well with eight points in the first quarter, and controlled the boards throughout. Isaiah Thomas had the best game of his young NBA career, scoring 20 points on 6-12 shooting with six assists in 23 minutes. Tyreke Evans had a big scoring night with 29, but shot just 7-22 from the floor (including 4-14 in the first half). But Evans was perfect from the line, hitting 14-14 including some big ones down the stretch. Making an impact when the shot isn't falling is right in Evans' wheelhouse.

As a team, the Kings went 31-34 from the line, something that would have seemed impossible in the first week of the season.

The Kings are now 4-7, and play at Houston on Friday and at Dallas on Saturday.

Reke, DMC, Isaiah combine for 70...

Who woulda thought?

I think Isiah found DMC on more pick and rolls tonight than Reke has in the past yearl

Loved the little man’s game. Absolutely loved it.

IT made his mark tonight!
rec'd or flagged...

not sure.

That picture of IT is fantastic

He looks like hes doing a worlds most interesting man impression.

Kings win?!?!?!!?!?

Kings Win!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Now Dance Time

We need that driving gif with Isaiah in place of Omri

What did the Kings 5 fingers say to the Raptor? *SLAP*!!!!

What is this?
Not funny

< /rimshot >

He's pissed that she doesn't let go at the right time in the spin!

Then he tries to play it off, like “oh shit, forgot we are in public!” Dude next to him is funny!

Can we all agree that Isiah should be getting a lot more of Jimmer's minutes?

No way Jimmer should be playing more. I’ve been an IT fan for awhile and have thought he should get more burn. This game confirms my feelings.

Wow. 1 game. As of yesterday, people were saying IT wasn't that good. Now he should take Jimmer's minutes.

IT is nice. His speed translates easier than Jimmer’s craftiness. Against the Raptors he looked very good. They will both have their ups and downs. I am sure they will both get burn and PT will be determined by who is playing better on a given night.

I've been on the bandwagon that Jimmer is getting more minutes than he deserves

Never said Isaiah is the one who should pick up his minutes, but after this game.. he gets the edge.

well, Thomas performance tonight, in a win, was a reason to put him ahead of Jimmer because he changed the game, he added a wrinkle

Jimmer is not able to do that yet.

Politically and 7th pick investment-wise you have to play Jimmer more and more to give room to improve.

Just think it is too early to say. Jimmer will take more time, but could bigger reward.
I agree that Jimmer is the bigger reward

But it’s all about winning ball games at the moment and If IT. gets you them over Jimmer, then IT. plays.

Watching the two of them play, you can see that Jimmer has more potential, but until he hones it in and can prove he can play better and more consistent than IT. you play IT.

If you are Coach Smart (or any Head Coach) you want, heck, you need to get wins

Thomas, today, not next season or later, will bring a different facet to the offense that Jimmer cannot yet produce. You have to give minutes to Thomas even if it cuts into Jimmer time a bit. And that doesn’t even count Marcus Thornton.

What about like it was tonight?

They both played fairly equal minutes, sort of switching off quarters and it seemed t work out. That way you leave room for Jimmer to hit his shots on a night that they start falling, and for IT to run the offense when it needs better leadership. Isiah has had bad nights, Jimmer obviously has too. I know Isiah was OUTSTANDING tonight, but I don’t know why people think he’s going to be that good every night, or why Jimmer will be this bad (as he has for the past 3 games). It’s so damn all or nothing on this thread and I don’t get it. Let’s respect both players and let them do their thing, especially when they’re hot.

We fans have trouble seeing more than a game ahead, it's a passion driven blindness

But that said, Thomas made a difference tonight, Jimmer can contribute but he cannot yet add a new dimension to the team, which is what Thomas did tonight. Just giving credit where credit is due – not knocking Jimmer.

More scoring potential.

But IT plays better defense. Averaging 20 points a night doesnt mean much if your giving up 20 on the defensive end. That was 1 of the biggest complaints about K-Mart right before he got traded.

While Jimmer isn't great on defense

I still don’t see him being as awful as his critics say. He’s no worse than Beno right now in his rookie season and I don’t question that his shot will start going in more often the more he plays.

Uh ....

… But he’s not Beno. Beno handles better, distributes better, generally shoots better, gets open for shots better … I’m pretty sure that if Beno played offense like Jimmer is right now, we’d have been mad at him all last season.

I guess I wasn't detailed enough in my response

I was responding to ridingthebench knock on Jimmer’s defense. To which, I say he’s no worse than Beno. Overall play, Beno still wins.

Ya maybe.

Though for the most part Jimmer has been guarding the bench second string guards. I think if we see him starting more often we will see opposing teams exposing Jimmer’s D. I can see IT preventing a Westbrook type guard from penetrating on a frequent basis but I think a guard of that speed would kill Jimmer.

If any of our guards outside of Reke

guards Westbrook, they will get destroyed.

Uh huh

Westphal chased short term wins over long term player development and look how that turned out.

Answer: he ended up with neither
Who said IT wasn't that good?

Most people have been saying he should get more minutes since the 1st game he played.

Go to last couple of game threads
I know I was.

IT has impressed me with effort since day one. The results that quickly followed effort impressed me even further. If he had been blessed with 6 more inches of height, he would have gone #1-5, not #60.

From what we saw tonight, I'll gladly take him as-is

NBA.com presents tonight’s Isaiah Thomas highlight reel:
http://www.nba.com/video/games/raptors/2012/01/11/0021100143_sac_tor_recap.nba

He isn't effective every game

Hence this talk of taking Jimmer’s spot is unfounded.

Not just 1 game

I was a big fan of his at Washingtin, he made a lot of great plays and had a lot of impressive showings in his junior and senior year. Particularly in the PAC-10 tourney. I was shocked when he fell to 60 in the draft and I think he’s played smart basketball when given the chances.

No doubt. Love him. Great pick at 60, but let's not call this a KO in Round 2
I suppose

but it’s hard not to when Isiah looks like a mid-80’s Mike Tyson out there.

We should take into consideration the opponent as well

The Raptors are awful.

NOBODY on the Kings this year has been able to make the passes IT has made.

Sure it was only 1 game, but he thread the needle more times tonight then Reke has done all this season. Don’t get me wrong, I love Tyreke. I just think Reke is better suited at the 2. I say give IT these starting PG minutes til MT23 is healthy. Jimmer has showed time and time again that he dribbles into traffic, jumps and passes into trouble and has been rather careless with the ball. Im not saying he can’t be great, Im just saying IT is better now.

He deserves minutes. Nice passer.
See my comment below

It looked darned impressive tonight. And if he keeps it up, let him get the minutes. But at the moment he is worse than Jimmer per 36 in assists, shooting % on FT, FG, and 3pt, and he has slightly more turnovers. Considering that Jimmer is obviously not playing his best ball right now, I don’t think this is a no-brainer at all.

this.

one game at a time right now. no need to get too high on one player or too low. take each game one quarter, one minute, one possession at a time.

Yep, there's always tomorrow

And there are two ends to the floor. (repeat ad nauseum)

1 game

I’d say no

IT looked great tonight

And if he can keep this up, I think he will quickly pass Jimmer in minutes. But, before we are ready to call Jimmer a bust and Thomas our starting PG, be aware that Jimmer is ahead of Thomas in virtually every offensive per 36 stat, including: assists, FG%, FT%, 3 pt %, and has slightly fewer turnovers.

Thomas has more points, rebounds, and steals, and none of their stats are particularly impressive. So it’s not a wash.

I say, let the best man play. But one game does not a career make.

Actually, I just checked the per-36's

And Thomas clearly exceeds Jimmer in every category, except he turns the ball over slightly more. I don’t think your per-36 numbers included last night’s game.

Still, agree overall that it’s one game. Against a crappy defense. Let’s not get too ahead of ourselves here.

oddly enough

Raptors are crappier on offense this year then on defense

Yep

I guess it takes a while after the game for BBR to update it’s numbers. If Thomas keeps playing games like last night, it won’t matter anyway. That was a heck of a game.

just to let people know

we beat the raptors tonight. The raptors. The same team that has played 3 games in 3 nights and just lost to the wizards last night. and if Barignani plays the 4th who knows. So lets quit with the whole this is a different team thing. On a different note they dont seem to trust Jimmer on ther floor. Tyreke never passes to him no matter how open he is. If jimmer wants to make an impact he’s gonna start hitting some 3’s or he wont be in the rotation for much longer.

Who invited Betty Buzzkill?
just saying

lets not get to crazy thats all. houstons not much better, so hopefully we can get another W.

making me look like a happy uplifting person
Nothing Wrong

With a little reality check. I waiting a while before I drink the kool aid too.

no certaintly nothing wrong with it

but this is a time for dancing so let the people dance

(although yes crazy “we’re going to win the next 10 games now for real and everything is fixed” and “we need to start Player X” is a little overboard but haven’t really been hunting for those types of comments)

Too high

For me. I’m waiting for a bit before I drink the kool aid.

Yeah I just scanned the gifs and picks to be honest

I am a big believer in stupid dane gifs and pics when there are wins. Seriously drinking koolaid and acting like we are going to steamroll the rest of the league or we know for sure X player is the real deal after one game not so much but then again I haven’t seen a ton of that (yet not looking so maybe wrong).

It's important that we make sports a passionless, emotionless enterprise as fans wally

Haven’t you heard?

We also didn't have Hayes or Thorton

So what Section said.

Okay, well he hit 2 of the team's 7 tonight...

He made 10 points on 10 shots….
Thornton usually makes around 20-23 on 20 shots….
Jimmer has had one of the best 3-point performances in a game this season (4-6)

I know he hasn’t been shooting great, but when you compare the numbers to someone like Thornton (our “leading” scorer), I guarantee he’s on track most games, despite his poor shooting, to get CLOSE to Thornton’s numbers IF he were to shoot 20+ shots a game. And this is with him shooting poorly, which he currently is.

I think people are blinded by the fact that they expect every shot of Jimmer’s to go in. A miss from Jimmer gets more attention than a miss from some others on the team. The Isiah>Jimmer argument follows the same logic. I think people don’t really realize their expectations for Jimmer are far greater, but in terms of their performance they’re pretty equal. And don’t get me wrong, I’m a huge Isiah fan.

Side note...

Kings are 1-0 in games Travis Outlaw doesn’t play…

We get so little from our 3 spot

I’ve got a pretty good idea what position we’re gonna draft.

Didn't we just do that?
We can still hope for Barns

until we get screwed in the lotter that is

We are also 1-0 in games that Demarcus doesn't play.

But screw that, fire OUTLAW

Valid point.

Yet Cousins has some above par games… meanwhile…outlaw….?

Fire Outlaw

and his stupid glove.

Amnesty him

Seriously.

4 more years of this shit?

Oh, Luther Head 2.0
Yes

but without the entertaining ridiculous pump fakes.

Nor the perfect name for the butt of jokes
The Raptors need to execute a 3 team trade with the Jazz and Hornets

Utah Raptors, New Orleans Jazz, Toronto Hornets. Makes a hell of a lot more sense than the current situation.

New Orleans Jazz

Toronto Saurus

Utah Man

Utah Shit it's Cold and Toronto Shit it's colder, but we have more Beer
Utah has beer...

It just sucks. 3.2% alcohol. 3.2%.

Thats not real beer then
John Salmons sucks
Water is wet
Section's old

(sorry, there was no way I could not do it)

I kinda feel like becoming a Salmons troll ala Chapu4u

I mean, Salmons needs at least one fan right? LOL

I stuck up for Salmons

I was expecting the last Salmons, not the guy a hair better than Outlaw.

I'm not willing to write him off yet

But then again that’s just me, literally.

We dont need anything special out of him...just solid.

And he was tonight. Only took 7 shots, 6 points, 3 steals. And he really didnt isolate with the ball a whole lot tonight. I am actually not hating Salmons after this game.

JJ HIckson has the LOWEST bball IQ on the team

Thompson needs to start over him.

Every time he gets the ball with his back to the basket

he turns to face up.

Jimmer vs IT

I’m from Jimmer’s hometown and am really concerned at how Jimmer is going to handle being a role player when for the last two years he had complete reign to do anything he wanted. That latitude allowed Jimmer enormous confidence that a shooter and scorer desparately needs In a limited role he’s struggling. He doesn’t know when to shoot and when not to. He doesn’t get the ball passed to him from Evans or Thornton unless they are totally stuck. He doesn’t play a lot of defense and when you’re averaging 8 pts per game it’s hard to ignore that. I don’t think the Kings will give Jimmer the ball as often as he needs it to develop confidence and am not sure if he’ll develop that instant offense off the bench he’ll need to to be effective. Tough fit right now, tough choice for the Kings. IT is actually playing better off the bench as a role player than Jimmer but I don’t think his ceiling is as high as Jimmer’s. It’ll be interesting to see how Coach Smart tries to bring Jimmer along or to see if he eventually stops playing him. Selfishly I’d like to see him with the ball more and shooting more, it what he does, it’s what he’s good at.

Win is a win

IT! IT! IT!

Well then......

Jimmer needs to man-up like IT. Plain & simple. He was drafted #7 because he is a baller. Start balling young man. No one is going to put you down for doing what you were brought here to do. Right now we don’t have a real star you should be deferring to. There’s no Lebron or Wade on this team. You don’t need to be Mario Chalmers.

Agree completely

He controls his own destiny. Can’t be shy, get up in Evans face and demand the ball.

the man does have a 20% usage rate
Statistics?
yes

actually doesn’t include this game though

I believe

It’s a confidence issue.

I like what he is trying to do

but personally have a feeling it’s a little more than just confidence or perhaps a better way to say it is that he has reasons for confidence issues because his hesitation dribble isn’t explosive enough and he is going to struggle driving to the hoop like he did in college. Think his bread and butter in the NBA would be the pick and roll but the whole team in Sac is struggling with that.

Agreed

But when Tyreke slashes to the lane and two perimeter defenders converge it isn’t a stretch to think Jimmer couldn’t hit a three when his man isn’t within 5 feet.

I've notice Jimmer doesn't tend to be in the corners

and Reke usually drives at a 90 degree angle to the baseline. It is hard for Reke to find him when he is over his shoulder. I think the 2 of them will figure it out, but how many times did IT get open corner looks and he playes the same spot as Fredette?

I've given up on hope with Reke on that

there are times where he has his back completely turned away from the hoop and can’t even see the hoop and has an even better view of the open man and he decides to shoot it even though others are blatantly open. Maybe he assumes he’s goin to get the foul call or thinks nobody can hit a 3 I dunno but for whatever reason he keeps on doing it

I agree with this, but his blind shot is still better than his dreaded jump-pass

To me, this is an issue of Tyreke’s inability to recognize where help defense is coming from earlier in his drive. If he were better at finding help defenders, he would be able to make the pass sooner, before he fully commits to a layup attempt.

If he made an extra move, like a stutter step, or 12 foot jumper after he turned the corner, it could draw out help defenders better.

actually

in college jimmer was pretty good at driving to the hoop. Its driving to the hoop in the NBA that he struggles with

going to struggle driving to the hoop like he did in college

Sorry what I meant was he is going to struggle to be as successful at driving to the hoop like he did in college. Or, unlike in college where he was succesful in driving to the hoop, he is going to struggle in the NBA.

This is an issue of his defenders recovering quicker.

Also doesnt help that he has SG’s like Batum or Evan Turner guarding him on most nights because he is in the backcourt with IT or Thornton often.

Still at 20 after this game
and if you want to pay up for synergy

it breaks down every single possession a player has

Wow

The excitement generated by a road win versus a mediocre team. This is a fan base starving for some sign of hope.

Bitch you don't know my life

Jk, Baby Mama quote

Fun Fact

Tyreke Evans is 45-52 line (87%) since his late night free throw fest.

You read it here, folks.

if that's the trick the whole team needs to do late night 2 AM offensive drills
Breaking news: Demarcus Cousins stays up late until 2AM practicing 400 layups and putback attempts

One can hope right?

Just got home

I’ve yet to watch the game but i’m honestly kinda surprised. Happy to see DMC put up beast numbers and Tyreke having a good scoring night oh and OUTLAW NOT PLAYING!!!!! Woo-hooo!!! FINALLY! But i’m reeeeally surprised that IT had the game that he did. That was totally unexpected and I was one of his biggest doubters. I was disappointed in Jimmer’s numbers specifically the lack of any assists and JJ still getting wayyy to many minutes and shooting horribly as always. BUTTTT pretty damn happy that we pulled out the win tonight. Now to watch the game for myself :)

The thing that was

Most encouraging was the fact that this team seemed to like each other tonight. That’s gotta be a “Smart” thing.

Ugh

Salmons still logging 30 minutes I see

Log is a very appropriate word
Salmon Log

What did the man

If Isiah hadn’t gone off, this game has a different ending.

Maybe, maybe not
so....

When do start giving all of Jimmer’s minutes to IT?

Saturday, if Thornton is still out

Might be a good time to tinker with the prospect of starting IT at point.

I say we do it even if Thorton is back

there is no shame in not starting Thorton his first game back from injury. We should just see how it goes with IT at point.

Ya let us shatter Jimmers confidence completely :(
:)

Great win Kings! I must say I love all these GIFS they make me laugh so much

I predicted Cousins going 20/20

At the start of the game in Thread 1 so I was dying for the Raptors to miss one of those late gimmies so he could corral his 20th board. I would have felt like Donte on the Tyreke shot if he had. Still though, great win and great performance. I think DMC needs to be our #1 option.

I'm just glad he didnt go all Ricky Davis to get stat accomplishments

Forcing a shot up and rebounding it for his last rebound.

Looks like he wanted to.
It's the little things

What I liked most about IT’s game last night is that he had multiple plays where he made fundamentally sound/smart decisions. In one instance, he caught the ball behind the 3 point line and gave a shot fake, which caused the defender to fly by. Instead of rushing a 3 before the defender could recover, he calmly took one dribble/step toward the basket and launched a nice an easy 18-19 foot jumper (I don’t remember if he made it, but it was still a nice play).

In the other instance that stood out for me, he was penetrating and looked off Kleiza (I believe it was Kleiza) to make it appear that he was going to kick it to the King spotting up for in the corner for 3. Right as Kleiza committed himself to the spot up shooter, he whipped the pass to a cutting DMC for the dunk. Very nice.

As for DMC, he’s had his lazy moments (think transition D), but the dude puts forth effort. There’s no denying that. Two plays stood out for me along those lines. The first was the O board where he muscled the toronto player right out of the way to get the put back and the foul. The second was the help he provided on a nice BLOB play by Toronto. Basically, IT got caught up in a series of picks and his man ended up coming free along the baseline. DMC saw this, jumped out at the shooter, and ultimately altered the shot (which was missed). So, a shot that could’ve been a wide open look was contested and ended up being missed. Effort plays. Keep doing it DMC!

Let’s hope this builds some momentum for Friday!

And lest I forget

Tyreke actually shot a pull up jumper! After falling out of my chair, I rewound the DVR several times and confirmed that it was actually him. Nice little pull up from the free throw line. Will miracles never cease?

In case you didn't know, DMC had chest conjestion and was coughing before during and after the game

and playing 36 minutes he might have been somewhat winded.

Thanks, I had no idea

He looked beat at the end. Great game for the young guy though.

As far as his transition D goes

I was thinking of a couple of earlier games where his transition D was slow and he’s wasn’t the only culprit in those games. Didn’t seem like an issue last night.

So if Im right

Petrie traded Brockman for Darnell Jackson and Isaiah Thomas ….. good job, Petrie.

Yeah funnily enough…I love me some Brockness, but Isaiah is gonna be a lot more helpful to this teams succession to the throne

Smart was smart

Playing the hot hand in IT and riding it, playing Tyreke 45 minutes and Cousins 39 minutes and giving Donte and Garcia some burn instead of Salmons in the fourth quarter. Cousins was a beast, IT provided the inspiration and Tyreke the guts.

Donte may be a better fit than Salmons at the 3.

Toronto isn’t very good.

Donté stood out to me this game, as well.

Maybe he realizes he has a clean slate and that there are SF minutes ripe for the plucking on this team. I saw him actually working for rebounds, active on both ends of the floor, not doing anything dumb. If he can bring focus and energy and make a positive impact while he’s out there, he’ll earn minutes on this team and probably secure his immediate future in this league (which I don’t think is a certainty for Donté, unfortunately). Basically, he should be emulating how his buddy JT is handling things right now.

I'm pretty sure Smart used Donte at the 4 to defend Bargnani and Klieza.

It’s easier to get rebounds when your defending a player that takes shots in close rather than long 2’s and 3’s. I think that Donte did actually have a Def Reb Rating of 20 which is quite good. Also, playing the 4 and being responsible for rebounding instead of playing a wing position whose responsibility it is to get back and stop the fast break also helps your rebounding numbers.

But, even if Donte gets his PT at the stretch 4, I’d be happy. I think what this team needs is a 4 that can stretch the defense by hitting some outside shots. It works for Orlando with Ryan Anderson. He pulls the defender out deep and allows Howard to go one on one in the paint.

So, if that's what we need from our 4, what do we need from our 3?

Would having a stretch 4 in the starting lineup make it easier to have ‘Reke as our starting SF (alongside MT at 2 and IT/acquired “true PG” at 1)? Maybe that way Donté (or a different stretch 4) could guard the bigger, better SFs and let ’Reke guard the opposing 4 if they’re not an offensive threat.

In this game and in the Lakers game, particularly, I thought Demarcus played like he suddenly realized "Hey, I'm a big effing dude".

When he plays like he’s the biggest guy on the court and forces the other team to figure out how to handle his size (don’t say it!) and he still pulls down boards and draws fouls like crazy, that’s when he’s winning games for this team. I’ve always thought that Cuz was a very smart player, but I think he’s starting to figure out how to be a crafty player, and I actually see him starting to get the refs on his side more often. I’ve said it before, when I see Big Cuz playing like a crafty brute with soft hands frustrating the hell out of the other team, I get Shaq flashbacks (flashshaqs? Shaqbacks?) and daydreams of Shaq’s hardware in our future.

Exactly right

Even Grant and Jerry were laughing about how DMC was pushing the Toronto bigs around. It might actually be a good idea as a teaching tool for the coaching staff to put together a highlight reel of vintage Shaq and how he operated in the low post and have DMC study it. Shaq was a once in a generation level of size, athleticism and skill, but with his size and skill DMC could certainly be a Shaq like beast on the blocks if he puts it all together. He doesn’t have a Shaq level of athleticism, but I certainly think he could compensate if he ramps up the craftiness.
