After two big wins in a row, the Kings came crashing back to Earth in Memphis. The Grizzlies were unstoppable offensively the whole game, scoring 128 points on 54.3% shooting, a season-high for opponent points. A whopping four players scored at least 20 points for Memphis, and they also shot 50% from the three point line. Rudy Gay was solid throughout, leading Memphis with 23 points, 4 assists and 4 steals, but Mike Conley got Memphis off to the races, scoring 15 of his 22 points in the 1st quarter alone. Marc Gasol had 20 points, 11 rebounds, 5 assists and 6 blocks as he dominated the Kings on both ends of the court, and O.J. Mayo chipped in with 22 points (6-10 from three) off the bench.
The Kings offense was not the primary issue tonight, as they had a season high in assists with 20 and scored well, but the defense was atrocious. The Kings looked a step slow all night, letting Memphis get into the paint at will (62 points in the paint for the Grizzlies). The Grizzlies also outrebounded Sacramento 51 to 38 and had just 11 turnovers to 27 assists.
Sacramento was without three starters for most of the game. Chuck Hayes is still out with a dislocated shoulder, but it looks like he's making a quick recovery and could be available to start playing next week. John Salmons was sick and stayed at the hotel, leaving Francisco Garcia to start in his place. Marcus Thornton started the game and played 13 minutes, and ended up sitting for the rest of the game due to a sore thigh, probably the same one he injured against Orlando a couple weeks ago.

Sacramento fell behind by 19 points early on in the 1st half thanks to Memphis' phenomenal shooting, but were able to rally back in the 2nd quarter with a 39 point outburst. Jimmer Fredette came in for Marcus Thornton and played like the guy we know he can be. He had 15 points and 6 assists in the 1st half, and the Kings were only down 8. Jimmer would finish with a team and career-high 20 points, beating his previous career high of 17, which also happened in Memphis.
The Grizzlies didn't let up in the 2nd half however, coming out just as hot, while the Kings had cooled off substantially. Sacramento only scored 16 points in the quarter, and that was essentially the ball game.
Tyreke Evans played 31 minutes but couldn't get anything really going offensively. Tony Allen did a fantastic job of pressuring him with or without the ball, and as a result Tyreke only got 9 shots off all night. He finished with just 13 points and 4 assists, and looked tired throughout the game.
DeMarcus Cousins had yet another double-double, scoring 19 points and having 11 rebounds, but he had trouble with Marc Gasol all night long, on both ends of the court. On offense, Marc's huge body and length stymied quite a few of DeMarcus' shots near the rim, and Cousins eventually had to step out and hit some jumpers, which continue to fall for him. Unfortunately on the other end, the jumpers fell for Gasol as well, who is a very underrated shooter, and he also has a great array of post-moves and excellent court vision for a big man. He plays a lot like a bigger, burlier Vlade Divac.
Donté Greene had an all-around great game, coming off the bench and scoring a season-high 19 points on just 11 shots, to go with 7 rebounds and 3 assists. He was efficient and played within himself and it was very good to see. He probably should have gotten the start over Cisco at SF, particularly with how big and long Rudy Gay is. Cisco did not match up well there and ended up with two quick fouls trying to guard him.
Travis Outlaw had perhaps his best game in Sacramento, which isn't saying much. He scored 8 points on 4-9 shooting off the bench, but like all the Kings had trouble on defense. J.J. Hickson had very little impact, with two points, 1 turnover and 2 fouls being his only statistical contributions. It was the first game all year J.J. hasn't corralled a rebound. Isaiah Thomas came in and did a good job defensively on Mike Conley and distributing the ball (he had 5 assists), but his shot once again had trouble falling and he went 1-7 from the field, with his only basket coming from being left wide open under the rim.
Keith Smart and the Kings need to study tape of the Memphis Grizzlies. They don't have the same talent level as Memphis yet, but they do have some similar players and they both want to play the same style of basketball. Coach Smart says he wants the Kings to be a team that rebounds and runs. Memphis is one of the teams that can really do that. They also have a lot of guys who can score, but they also realize the necessity of sharing the ball, and do that as well.
There are lessons to be learned from these massacres. With a day off tomorrow, hopefully the Kings can regroup and get back to playing good basketball, and they'll have a tough task on Sunday when they visit Portland.

I found this blowout surprisingly easy to swallow.
I missed the 1st quarter, but obviously the team looked great in the 2nd, and then I thought that even in the second half as they were getting destroyed, the Kings’ offense didn’t look like a mess, they were getting a lot of good looks that were rimming-out. I also didn’t feel like they were necessarily letting Memphis walk all over them on defense, I saw the Grizzlies hit a lot of nice jumpers and putbacks in the 2nd half. They had a lot of guys that were playing great. That’s a talented team that really got rolling on us.
Also, someone needs to open a Memphis BBQ joint in Natomas so that maybe Jimmer can keep his Tennessee magic going when he’s back at home.
AnotherStupidSN - January 21, 2012
Smart says this loss is "under the bridge."
Sounds like there is no plan to review tape, etc. He is just putting it behind them. That is probably a wise decision on his part, imo.
Slam_Dunk - January 21, 2012
I haven't watched the presser
but I imagine that Coach knows his guys were playing hard and mostly playing smart, but they were gassed in the second half and couldn’t answer a team that had 2 or 3 really hot hands on the court at any one time.
AnotherStupidSN - January 21, 2012
Yeah they were just rolling
It seemed like they hit every open jumper they took. It didn’t help that we let them get into the paint at will though.

One thing that irks me is the Grizzlies are only averaging 15K a game
in an arena that holds 18K. That’s piss poor attendance for a team that’s as good as they are. I don’t think there’s any way attendance would be that low in Sac if we had a good team.
deadenddude - January 21, 2012

Philly is pretty bad too.
chenp22 - January 21, 2012
Which is inexcusable in a city with 6 million people
Same story with Atlanta. That’s why it pisses me off so much when I hear talk of contracting or moving the Kings while these much bigger cities with actual good teams get a pass for their crummy attendance.
deadenddude - January 21, 2012
It's all about TV and merch these days unfortunately
prowseinthehouse - January 21, 2012
Getting anywhere in Atlanta is a nightmare
it is more spread out than the greater Sac area, people don’t want to spend 1.5 hours in traffic.
VenomySnicket - January 22, 2012
But the Bucks, Pistons, and Raptors all suck
so you expect the bad attendance. There’s just no excuse for a playoff team to have those numbers though. In my opinion if a city can’t even show up in support of a playoff team, they don’t deserve a team.
deadenddude - January 21, 2012
Doesn't surprise me
but I just haven’t seen it myself. But I was watching pictures of the Bucks game for whatever reason, and the whole freaking second level was just empty. damn.

Shizzo - January 21, 2012
The upside for me is that, the more the attendance is down in the NBA, it seems more difficult for the Maloofs to make out a case to move from a city that demonstrates its loyalty as well and as long as Sacramento.

Jimmer
Missed tonights game but saw Jimmer got 20 in 32 ninutes. How did he play, did he distribute and defend. Were his points important or garbage timers? In any event it’s got to be a lift for him since he’s been struggling badly.
bankers hours - January 21, 2012
Did well in the second quarter
He had 15 points and 6 assists before the half and helped get the kings within eight.Second half his 5 points came from free throws. Grizz just came out on fire in the second half against the kings atrocious defense. It was basically the perfect storm for kings to lose.
mmarcum - January 21, 2012
He played with lots of heart.
He was slashing through the defense, and running and trying to get open. IT wouldn’t pass to him at all though. It was as if IT was just trying to upstage Jimmer to get PT. However, most of the few times IT did pass his way, Jimmer would toss it right back to let IT shoot a 3- pointer
killerking - January 21, 2012
IT doesnt seem to be a selfish guy like that.
Although my comment here is just speculation, as I was not able to catch the game.
Glad to see Jimmer start to find his game.
Wonderchild - January 22, 2012
as for his defense
he did get burned quite a few times, but so did the whole team. Still a work in progress.
mmarcum - January 21, 2012
+1
Conley took it right up Jimmer’s grill on a fast-break. He knew there was no way he was going to attempt to block it, or even foul him unfortunately.
caseycheesecake - January 21, 2012
Jimmer straight-up balled tonight.
Loved his confidence.
caseycheesecake - January 21, 2012
Did defense was so so so so bad though
Shizzo - January 22, 2012
If Smart can get this collection of folks to play together as a team, then he should be coach of the year. Even in a loss, I saw signs of development and cohesiveness, and like has been said already, this loss was much easier to handle that what we have had to enure of late. Definitely looking forward to Portland.
ExPFCWintergreen - January 22, 2012
Why aren't the guys trying to set decent screens?
It’s really apparent when they run the first option in the half court offense. It looks like they’re going through the motions at best. I don’t know if the down screens are just there to give the wings some space to catch the ball or if there trying to get freed up for a shot, but it’s pathetic.
Crocoduck - January 22, 2012 via mobile
Just seeing you mention down screens, good or bad, is a progression in and of itself.
Sure, they could get better, but their pure existence is a good sign.
Wonderchild - January 22, 2012

The loss was Salmons Fault! No it was not playing Jimmer!!!
I kid of course. But I did like that Smart said he wasnt going to read too much into it and would let that game go. As he said there was alot to learn from that game in seeing what is possible as Memphis was a well oiled machine. But bottom line is they are a tired bunch short three starters against one of the top probably 2-3 teams in the conference.
Plenty of positives to take in that DMC was still running even in a game that was gone late, Jimmer found confidence (if only he had found the opposition!) Donte and Outlaw looked as good as they have all year (not saying too much necessarily but still.)
But when you are down a few starters already and then JT struggles and Tyreke cant get off against one of the leagues premier defenders, I didnt have much hope anyhow.
On to the next one, hopefully a bounce back competitive game.
