Tyler Honeycutt has officially been recalled by the Sacramento Kings from the NBA D-League's Reno Bighorns. Honeycutt spent a few weeks with Reno, but earned limited playing time. It's unclear why exactly the Kings chose to bring him back, though Marcus Thornton continues to struggle with a quad injury.
Honeycutt was a second-round pick in the 2011 NBA Draft and is one of three rookies on the Kings roster. He has played just a bit this season, though he did start one preseason game under Paul Westphal. He was assigned to Reno before Keith Smart took over as head coach.

Wow another 3 that cant shoot
Problem Solved..not bagging on TH just frustrated with lack of a decent 3!
want2win - January 24, 2012
he can still shoot better than salmons
deucedeuce - January 24, 2012
Okay lets start him at the 3 right away to see what he's got...can't be any worse than any 3 we are putting out on the court every game
deucedeuce - January 24, 2012
Start him at the 3 if he agrees to never shoot
If it works with him we can try it with some other guys
ElRonToro - January 24, 2012
desperation is a bad cologne
yaboyrafa - January 24, 2012
Hey, um, does everybody just hate Whiteside?
Is he really that bad that he can’t get 5 mins in a game to block some shots?
Ice_9ine - January 24, 2012
I'm guessing yes
otis29 - January 24, 2012
I like him, but my opinion doesn't matter to the Kings
With Chuck injured, I’m not sure why we don’t let him suit up and sit on the bench. With all the 30 point blowouts I don’t see why he can’t get time at the end of the game.
SharkKings49 - January 24, 2012
Perhaps that is the rationale.
If he is not getting minutes in the D-league, perhaps they figure he may get more minutes playing on the team.
Slam_Dunk - January 24, 2012
Maturity
I think he is lacking a lot of it, and Lord knows this team doesn’t need anymore fuel for that fire.
Dirkula - January 24, 2012
I wonder how much playing time Smart will give to him
yaboyrafa - January 24, 2012
.....
Would be nice to see when “kings officially send john salmons to the d-league”

SayWhat? - January 24, 2012
just wondering
has anyone ever gone down to the d-league, struggled to get minutes, then get recalled and either play well, or develop into a good player? that’s an actual question, i’m not being facetious.
MIKELOOP - January 24, 2012
Good question
…but I wonder how many coaches down there care about the development of NBA players that were sent down. I know they’re owned by NBA teams, but I’m sure they care about winning too and they’re probably winning by playing whoever was there from the beginning.
Then again, if Lebron James was there, I’m sure he’d play every minute.
OK< i quit lol
mrosado - January 24, 2012
Only some D-League teams are owned by NBA teams
And the Bighorns are not one of them. They are owned by somebody else.
If the Kings owned them it would demonstrate that they have a program for developing their young talent… but no.
CowbellKings - January 24, 2012
I just hope he's off the bench before Outlaw
Reke_Havoc13 - January 24, 2012
Some positives to note about this move....
1. He went to UCLA, so he knows the zone.
2. Maybe he has been working on his corner 3.
3. Might be a good slasher/ off the ball mover.
4. Smart may like his talents more than PW did.
5. Cant be any worse defensively than our current SFs
Just kinda spitballing here.
Wonderchild - January 24, 2012
Playoffs!
DiegoKing - January 24, 2012
Does anyone know if we can amnesty Salmons AND Outlaw, or if there is a one person limit? Because I could go for that...
ThankgodwehaveWhiteside! - January 24, 2012
You can only amnesty one player until the next CBA
raiderking21 - January 24, 2012
Also, players who have been amnestied once can't be amnestied again
Outlaw can be cut, or following this season traded (at $3M per), but not amnestied. And we can’t trade him this year. And we can’t trade him to the Nets ever.
Capt. Factorial - January 24, 2012
It is upsetting to think that we took on Salmons, only now looking to Amnesty him.
Kings finally clear the books, then make another bad decision. This is Petrie’s baby.
Slam_Dunk - January 24, 2012
He is Westphal's baby
Petrie is only guilty of trying to give the coach what he felt he needed.
Gotta hand it to Petrie actually.
He was actually willing to do whatever it took to help his coach succeed, before firing him. That shows a lot of respect and integrity IMO.
Dirkula - January 24, 2012
Respectfully disagree.
I don’t think it is a bad thing for a GM to consider the wishes of his coach, to give support to the vision; but he also has to look at the whole picture and determine what consequences could happen if he pulls the trigger.
How was it so many of us could see the problem with this trade, but he seemed to be oblivious? He has to be held responsible for this trade, because he was the one that ultimately made the decision. Not only were there on court considerations, but there is a hefty salary to consider. There was a need for a PG, but Petrie went ahead and traded off Beno, without getting an adequate replacement. I don’t give him any respect for his decision. It was a very poor one, imo. If you think he is so admirable for doing it, that is fine. I just don’t agree with you.
Slam_Dunk - January 24, 2012
I hear ya
but you have to admit, John was a lot better when he was here the first time around.
I think Petrie got duped for sure, but I respect that he gave Westphal the opportunity he asked for.
Trust me, I am no Salmons fan, (Notice my sig), so it’s not like I am happy about this at all.
Petrie has certainly not done much as of late, but I completely place that blame on an ownership that has no $$ and therefore no business owning this team.
Dirkula - January 24, 2012
You blame the Salmons deal on cheap ownership
When we took additional dollars in the deal?
otis29 - January 24, 2012
No Otis
I blame the lack of activity by Petrie on cheap ownership.
The Salmons deal was a bad attempt to make it appear they were willing to spend IMO. Once they made that move they did nothing more to legitimize they were willing to spend.
Dirkula - January 24, 2012
Wow, that's an interesting way to look at it
Another way is that Petrie was too lazy to fight Westphal on what he wanted and went ahead and picked up a crappy player, then in the first ten games of the season canned the coach that needed him so bad.
Or that Petrie was the guy that wanted him and just screwed the pooch.
otis29 - January 24, 2012
I think your way is more interesting
However I have never thought of Petrie as being “lazy”.
It’s possible he has lost his desire, and that could be misinterpreted as lazy, but I would again blame the shoddy ownership for that. You can only do so much with what they give you.
Dirkula - January 24, 2012
I think we are all in agreement that the Maloofs are cheapskates. But there’s no denying that the recent dumb moves that Petrie has made weren’t exactly done to save cash.
And if you really think signing Chuck Hayes, Marcus Thornton, Travis Outlaw and trading for JJ Hickson and John Salmons was meant to give fans the impression the Maloofs are opening the checkbook…well, I don’t know what to tell you. I’ll just agree to disagree.
otis29 - January 24, 2012
I see your point
and I agree with you for the most part.
I guess I just have a lot more patience with Petrie than I do with the Maloofs, and perhaps some of it is unwarranted.
The fact that the Maloofs are trying to take our team away, and have oftentimes inflicted their “opinions” on trades just gives me that much more hostility towards them then it does Petrie, but perhaps I need to criticize him more based on the recent signings.
Dirkula - January 24, 2012
I think the Kings are saving the amnesty
for a trade.
Would they be allowed to amnesty a player received in a package deal? If so, thats a good chip to hold onto.
Dirkula - January 24, 2012
I believe you can only amnesty a player that was on your roster at the time the CBA was signed
rpmonkey - January 24, 2012
Bummer
Dirkula - January 24, 2012
Amnestying Salmons makes no sense
Based on the last three years there is no way the Maloofs are going to be near the cap in the next three years.
mattrick - January 24, 2012
Championship.
Dub_TC - January 24, 2012
I hate this.
If he cant even get any run in Reno, why would we think he will play up here?
He wont get any better sitting on the bench and not playing or practicing (since there isnt a lot of practice with the condensed schedule).
TrojanCBB - January 24, 2012
Agreed in principle
The only thing that could be a potential good thing is that he has not spent any time with the team under Keith Smart. If there is a different dynamic or locker room vibe since when he left, it might not be bad to have him back up with the big club for awhile.
section214 - January 24, 2012
Agreed.
And the fact remains: he can’t be that much worse than anyone else who has played at the 3 for us this season.
rpmonkey - January 24, 2012
Or
They like the locker room dynamic as it currently and are worried his maturity (or lack thereof) might upset it.
otis29 - January 24, 2012
Or
There is no rational reason for anything that happens in the Kings organization.
Shizzo - January 24, 2012
Hammer hits nail
HighTops - January 24, 2012
And, chemistry is important
If Smart can get some chemistry on the court going and they plan to keep Honeycutt then he should be part of it. Otherwise, he would come in later and not be a part of the team. Potentially killing said chemistry.
CowbellKings - January 24, 2012
Really good point here
Although Honeywell may actually have had a higher likelihood of seing court time under Westphal’s music chairs-style rotations – good thing he was sent up to Reno for a while. Smart seems to have a better knack for chemistry, so hopefully he will use Honeywell accordingly. It would be great to see how he does lined up next to the new Fredette/Isaiah dynamic that is proving to be a nice boost off the bench.
