It's no surprise, but Ken Berger of CBS Sports reports that the Sacramento Kings will not reach an Early Bird contract extension with J.J. Hickson before Wednesday's deadline. Hickson, Jason Thompson and Donte Greene are all eligible for Early Bird extension on account of being fourth-year players approaching restricted free agency. If the Kings do not reach agreements by the deadline, each player will become a restricted free agent on July 1, provided that the team extends qualifying offers to each.
If no extensions are reached, the team can still freely trade Hickson or the others before the March 15 trade deadline, so there's nothing to worry about there. Thompson's the most productive player in the mix, but Hickson's an interesting case because the Kings gave up a protected first-round pick plus Omri Casspi to get him. Letting him take offers in July and potentially walk if the price gets too high will sting when/if the Cavaliers collect their draft pick.
That pick is safe for the 2012 draft unless the Kings make the playoffs, which ... ha ha, very funny.

Good
he has yet to make a good enough case to support an extension
yaboyrafa - January 24, 2012
Man
Why did you have to remind us!?
Simply awful.
Dirkula - January 24, 2012
Omri is playing worse than him and would likely not get the extension either
and with how we’re playing, we’ll still have our first round draft pick.
HeuristicLineup - January 24, 2012
Casspi's playing better after a horrible start
We’ll still have our first round draft pick, but Mr. Petrie doesn’t have it to negotiate with either.
otis29 - January 24, 2012
From what I understand
Is once we’ve locked up that the trade pick is still ours, we can still trade it.
HeuristicLineup - January 24, 2012
True
But it might be after the trade deadline this season. Although the way things are going, it’s hard to tell.
otis29 - January 24, 2012
Casspi:
Hickson:
Bit of a wash, but we could have used the help at the 3.
Does the draft pick fall off after this year or does it become unprotected at some point?
Dirkula - January 24, 2012
Unprotected a ways down the road
Five years, I think?
otis29 - January 24, 2012
Ouch
Don’t see this team being out of the lottery in 5 years the way things are now.
This could really prove to be worse than I thought.
Dirkula - January 24, 2012
I would go POSTAL if this was the case
Shizzo - January 24, 2012
Don't you mean...?
Dirkula - January 25, 2012
Eventually they will give up the pick once the aren't in the lottery, I think
deadenddude - January 24, 2012
Applicable then, and applicable now.....
Dirkula - January 24, 2012
I still can't believe how bad Hickson has turned out to be
Maybe I was just hopeful, but I was expecting a 14pts 10 rbs guy. I guess I wasn’t being realistic
JVinci - January 24, 2012
I expected 15 and 8 with 2 highlight plays per game
Shizzo - January 24, 2012
Hickson -
Hicksoff.

Mostly off...

Love it!

Thank God
As far as the “sting” goes, I’d take the sting rather than stab myself in the heart to take away the pain of the sting.

Another brutal trade by the geoffster
lchristmas - January 24, 2012 via mobile
What the heck is this team doing
No extension for JT either. It’s almost like they have no game plan at all and are just operating on the fly.
deadenddude - January 24, 2012
To me the best thing about JJ
as that he makes JT look so good.
Balky Needs - January 24, 2012
that is unfortunately true
MichaelMack - January 24, 2012
Maybe they just need time
to truly evaluate their
asshatsassets before committing to any of them?I would imagine the signings made lately have Geoff questioning if he should pull the trigger on anything unless he absolutely has to.
Dirkula - January 24, 2012
Also
Aren’t these guys easier to move in a trade if they aren’t signed?
Dirkula - January 24, 2012
THESE guys
probably yeah
deadenddude - January 24, 2012
Maybe it is a message:
There are no guarantees.
Either play your butts off;
Or, you are out of here.
Slam_Dunk - January 25, 2012
Aww man GUYS!!!!!!!! But JJ hickson rebounds so well and and and and ANDDDDD he might have some potential! come on I love jj hickson!
CousinsEvansDUO - January 24, 2012
Watch your step, people.
defender96 - January 25, 2012 via mobile
Not offering an extension is just ensuring that we don't do a Cisco contract all over again
No need to give him 5mil per year if no one else is willing to either. We will get far market value for him if we resign him or force another team to cut into their cap room to pull him away.
GP has deservedly been taking a lot of flack for his transactions of late but this isn’t something to cry about.
sac_faithful - January 24, 2012
He doesn't deserve one
The team’s managment team is better off not neotiating contracts at all. Geoff Petrie does not understand the value of leverage at all.
So far the Kings have basically given their draft pick albeit heavily protected along with a better player (currently) for a worse player.
kingme18 - January 24, 2012 via mobile
Hickson & Casspi
are essentially equal as players. Still, giving up the pick was ridiculously stupid.
richie88 - January 24, 2012
Don't agree.
caseycheesecake - January 25, 2012
So does Petrie including the 1st rd pick in the trade mena that he was sure we had no shot at the playoffs this year?
Or did he think JJ was that good?
elSAVinator - January 24, 2012
Prospectively Hickson is the athletic frontcourt player the Kings needed
Retrospectively, the lottery pick is secure.
betweentheeyes - January 25, 2012
No surprise here
Any decision that does not have to be made before the outcome of the Sacramento/Anaheim decision will not be made.
convoy - January 25, 2012
I´m a little surprised we extend none of the three.
Reminds me of a broke company that´s just trying to hang on as long as possible to make sure the “owners” have enough time to shred all the tax papers.
rubenho - January 25, 2012
The only one of the three that has shown himself to be deservant is JT
His hustle and, finally, showing improved court smarts makes him worthy.
Dzzz - January 25, 2012
In Petrie I Don't Trust
Let’s face it, at best the two trades didn’t make us any better. And one could reasonably argue that they made us worse. The Salmons trade has a worse smell in my opinion, but I wasn’t a supporter of either. Both Omri and Beno make more sense with the pieces of this current team than Salmons and Hickson. (If Hickson were a better player my opinion would be different.)
Kusian - January 25, 2012
What do we do about JT and Donte?
We aren’t doing well with them now, but we know what we have with them and with a piece or two through trade or free agency, perhaps they become valuable role players. I could see one or both of them flourishing if and when they leave Sac.
Tom A~! - January 25, 2012
I love Donte as a human, but on the Court- Goodbye..Honestly looking at this team next year here is my hopes
Donte Greene, J.J. Hickson – Trade at the deadline for a Starting SF (Probably take back money and a late 1st rounder from contender)- Might also need to put Whiteside here
John Salmons - Amnestied
Travis Outlaw- Well if we trade him off in the offseason, might as be there for deep bench
In the Draft would love either a SF to replace Garcia in 2014(Garcia’s contract is up end of 2013 unless they pick up the team option but i cant see that at 6.4 million) or another Big
JT goes through RFA – With not much in bids and we get him for around a little higher then QO at around 5-6.5 million a year for 4 years (4 year 1/2 million in crease each year for a total of 23 million)
This would put us at
Jimmer > Thomas
Tyreke > Thornton
??? > Garcia > Honeycutt
Hayes > Outlaw as a stretch 4
Cuz > JT first big off bench
