Bumped. This is important. Send your letters if you have not already. -- TZ
We showed the world why Sacramento deserves to keep our Kings. Now let's show the City Council how important this is to us outside the arena.
Below the jump we have a sample letter that we are encouraging everyone to send to the members of the Sacramento City Council, four of whom voted this week to essentially kill the progress, and all of whom will be making critical votes on critical components in the coming weeks. Staff will soon be recommending negotiations with parking operators, and hopefully, a term sheet with one bidder. We need 'yes' votes. That 5-4 vote this week? Way, way too close for comfort. That was damn near the Horry Shot. We need a Bibby Shot to get back, and we need to hit our free throws. (I'm stretching, right? I'm tired.)
Whether you live in Sacramento or Timbuktu, you are here because you are a Sacramento Kings fan. Please help this push to let the Council know that this is important. The sample letter -- which you should absolutely feel free to personalize -- and the email addresses are below the jump.
Let's get loud again.

Dear Councilmember,
I am writing to urge you to support the city staff's recommendation on the proposal to lease parking facilities in order to generate capital needed to construct a new entertainment and sports complex in downtown Sacramento.
Boosting the Sacramento economy should be our No. 1 priority right now. A new entertainment complex at the Railyards would generate an estimate $157 million in regional revenue annually, $100 million of that just in downtown. The local tax base will be increased by an estimated $6.7 million per year. That's money that can help pay the police officers and firefighters our community needs long-term.
We'll begin seeing those returns immediately, as the development of the project could create up to 4,000 sorely needed construction jobs downtown, and development of additional area parcels currently sitting idle could add thousands more to that tally. Building a new entertainment complex also keeps the thousands of jobs tied to arena operation in Sacramento. We can't afford to lose those jobs. The proposed developers of the project have entered an agreement with regional labor groups to keep those jobs local.
This proposal has unprecedented support from labor, from business and from the hundreds of thousands of residents who enjoy first-class entertainment options like NBA basketball, the music industry's top acts and so much more. This is a historic opportunity to help secure Sacramento's economic future, and it's one we can't afford to pass up.
Please join me in supporting the staff proposal on funding a new downtown entertainment and sports complex.
Sincerely,
[YOUR NAME]

Which I placed in the subject line, with my sincerely yours and signature in the body. If they are like me, they will only open a fraction of their emails, but will read the subject line.

Keep writing the letters, this comment is not meant to say don't do it. This is just personal observations of the road we are going down.
Obviously this whole thing would fall apart if the February 14th vote goes south. Personally, I can’t see any way that can possibly happen. February 28th is the big one though. Although you likely got four votes already for it, it’s going to be much more difficult and the most important one of them all.
I dunno if the Maloofs really have a viable place to move next season so perhaps even if the vote goes south the NBA will still do a 60 day extension or perhaps we go into weird desperate hoping the NBA goes to war with the Maloofs on whether they can go to Anaheim or not. Got zero clue on that; however, if you can count up 5 votes on the 28th you for sure get another 60 days to work out the rest of the deal.

Everyone Please Remember a Major Point in all of This
—When explaining to a nay sayer Sac Bee moron OR to someone who matters.
The current amount of money the city gets for parking is going to be protected. ALL of this NEW money that is going towards the arena, doesn’t exist, BUT for a downtown arena.
All of this NEW parking money for ALL events is currently being collected by the Maloofs at PBP. The Maloofs not getting this money is a big, big point in all of this and could be considered a major concession/contribution on their part.

but having said that you do bring up a great point in those last two sentences
wallywagon11 - February 10, 2012
First off
- I sent my emails to the council members.-or even a parking meter. This is a boat load of not good, but my view of this is that the city council should be dissolved and merged into a city/county like SF. Nothing could be worse than the governance, if you can call it that, which we have seen from the council in the last 25-plus years. Beesides, just about all I care about in this town anymore is the Kings, so let’s get this done. But I disagree with this characterization of the parking lot scheme. Truth be told, this is an awful way in which to raise money because it takes governance away from the council members and allows the parking lot and parking meter contractors to effectively dictate policy because they are owed a penalty if a lot is removed

WOOOOOOO GO KINGS
Wait, what is this post about?
Briceratops - February 10, 2012
This was mine
Truth in advertising. I am a King’s fan. Season ticket holder for 24 years. My son attended Mitch Richmond, Derrick Dickey, Vinnie Del Negro and many other King’s summer basketball camps. He learned a lot about the game and some about life. He had attended the Dickey camp at about age 8. About 6 months later he saw Derrick on the floor after a game. He asked if he could speak to him. I said he doesn’t want to be bothered. He said Derrick had stated they could come up to him to talk anytime, so I said OK. As I watched the conversation extend to 5 minutes I walked down to make sure things were ok. I found Derrick talking him about hoop and the importance of education and to watch out for the kids who may try to lead you away from your goals. My son is now 25 and remembers the camps and the departed Dickey fondly. He is now well educated but unfortunately genetically challenged for the NBA.
All that said, I won’t bore you with how the jobs and revenue will help the Sacramento Community and help diversify our jobs market from state related jobs.
I will say that the King’s charity work is irreplaceable. I won’t remind you that you have all agreed that the current parking revenue stream will be replaced (say a 4 or 5 $ a ticket surcharge?) so that is a non-issue. I will remind you that the tourism head said a few years ago that the King’s directly influenced 3 or 4 million dollars a year being spent in Sac. I will also remind you that the chief of police wants the jobs it will provide for our city.
My point is, that even with all the Disney on Ice events and all the concerts I have gone to with my daughter, I still think the primary thought should be “does this project pencil out and will it be good for the city”. From everything I have read, heard and surmised, this project goes beyond pencilling out; It could change the dynamics of the city forever.
You people are in control of the future of Sacramento. This is a time to forget politics, forget how will your vote affect your chances of being re-elected, and do what’s best for the city. Let Sacramento have the greatness it deserves. To stumble or fail here could adversely affect the next 50 years . I want to , in 20 years, walk with my kids, and their kids, through the streets of the Railyard and tell them that I remember when this booming bustling heart of sacramento was just a pile of toxic dirt.
As a side point, I was reading a Sac Bee circa 1955 + or – and it was discussing all the possibilities of the railyard. Seriously. I am 61 and the city has spent my entire life trying to figure out what to do. End the discussion, vote for greatness, and you will forever be known as the city council that ushered in the great new era of Sacramento.
ElRonToro - February 10, 2012
This is awesome.
Your letter would certainly influence my thinking, especially if I were on the fence.
Slam_Dunk - February 10, 2012
excellent letter
My son also attended the Mitch Richmond camp. One thing that is lost on many people, that you touched on, is how much the Kings influence young people in the community. Whether it be charities, or the simple fact that they know the Kings are their “Sactown” team, it makes a huge difference. I was involved in youth basketball leagues in South Sac for many many years, and the positive influence and sense of community provided by the simple fact of the Kings’ presence here can’t be under-emphasized. Great letter,ElRon. However, it makes me realize how awful mine was….
ExPFCWintergreen - February 10, 2012
over-emphasized. Editing would help….
ExPFCWintergreen - February 10, 2012
Great Letter
I am fired up now to write mine. I also attended Vinny Del Negro camp, Bobby Hurley, and best of all, Kenny Smith.
I had an almost identical story to your son’s, however mine was about approaching Kenny Smith on the floor before a Kings game. This was about six months after the camp and he had been traded to the Hawks (for Spud Webb) but was in town playing against the Kings.
I spotted him shooting free throws during warm-ups and my dad’s friend told me he would give me a dollar if I went down to the court and said hi (I was probably 7 or 8). So I went down there, called out his name and he came over and talked to me for a few minutes. He remembered me from camp and called me by the nickname he had made up for me during camp. As a little kid I was shocked that he remembered me, but stoked that he would come over and say what up.
Anyway, great letter mine, off to write mine.

I sat in 119 Row G last night! Right by sign lady last night!!
Last night was easily a top 3-5 Home Kings game for me. The others being the final game against the Lakers last year, and games I went to against the Lakers in the infamous 7 game series.
Get this arena built!
ivAAron - February 10, 2012
If you were at the game last night
Please remind them that everyone was buzzing like crazy after that win. If the arena was downtown, that energy would stay downtown and result in all kinds of money being spent at the nearby businesses. In Natomas, people just get in their cars and go home and the city completely fails to monetize any post-victory energy from the fans. I mean honestly, if last night’s game was downtown, how many of you would have gone straight home and how many of you would have stayed downtown and gone to a restaurant or bar or some other place to celebrate? Some people would do that anyways, win or lose, but on a big night like that, people are willing to live a little and loosen the pursestrings a bit. If you unleash 18,000 in the mood to celebrate downtown, the city is surely going to get a decent chunk of revenue back for 41+ nights a year.
jveezy - February 10, 2012
I think a lot of people were looking for something to do!
Chants went on for well after the game, and I know I didn’t leave until about 11:30. Not even from Sac and I definitely would have stayed and had a drink (I wanted a celebratory one badly) if it were downtown.
ina_118 - February 10, 2012
Exactly
What do people say? “Hey let’s celebrate! Let’s go drive all the way downtown through all this traffic so we can get something to eat”? Hell no.
But if the restaurant’s right there waiting for them or it’s on the way to the car, why the hell not? Especially if you’re a family and you have kids with you that are going to bug you to cap the night off with something a little more special than picking something up at a drive thru somewhere on the way home.
jveezy - February 10, 2012
You make a good point.
I wanted to linger around, take in the moment. People were walking out with so much energy. If there were some places to go right after the game, located right there, I could see staying awhile to continue the feeling. A little dessert would have been nice.
Slam_Dunk - February 10, 2012
Yep.
You could be dirt poor and still feel the next to spend a little extra on a night like that. You got more than your money’s worth at the game.
jveezy - February 10, 2012
It is like experiencing a really intense experience and wanting to process it with other people who also shared that experience.
I hated to leave.
Slam_Dunk - February 10, 2012
My email
Imagine what would have happened if Thursday night’s game against Oklahoma City took place downtown. 17,317 people, all in the mood to celebrate and spend money, already downtown surrounded by restaurants, bars, and other downtown attractions. In tough economic times, nights like Thursday night put people in the mood to lighten up and spend a little more. And a good chunk of that money could end up in city coffers.
That’s a revenue stream that doesn’t currently exist for the city. People go straight home after games now and the city doesn’t do enough to capture the energy and the buzz from nights like Thursday night. Thursday night, people were itching for something to do after the game and couldn’t find any place to throw their money. Maybe they stopped by at a fast food joint somewhere off the highway on the way home, but that won’t nearly match the revenue you can get from sales and property taxes for businesses near the entertainment and sports complex downtown. Put a restaurant in front of them near the building or on the way to the car though, and they’ll almost feel obligated to spend a little more money to celebrate.
This is a consistent long-term revenue stream for the city, and that’s what this project is all about. I’m moving to Rancho Cordova in the next month, and for the most part, I don’t have a reason to travel to Sacramento no matter how close it is. Let the Kings leave and I have even less of a reason to go. I want you to take my money. I know you need it for other services, but the only way you’ll get it from people like me consistently is to build an entertainment and sports complex downtown so that I can go watch a game 41+ nights a year and drop another $40 or so at restaurants and other places downtown either before or after the games. I’ll even take the light rail to get there. Just give me a reason to visit and don’t take away the only one I have.
If you oppose this, keep in mind that that’s a lot of revenue you’re throwing away. That’s a lot of progress and future development that you’re throwing away. That’s a lot of money from outside of Sacramento that you’re preventing from coming into town and contributing for the future of Sacramento’s schools and other services. If you choose on Tuesday to stand in the way of legitimate long-term progress in Sacramento, that’s on you. You’ll go down in history as the city council that not only failed to capitalize on an opportunity to pull Sacramento out of the recession it’s in, but as the city council who willfully made the problem worse and made it harder than ever to fix it.

Grant asked Chris why he and his TNT mates provided bad information about the Council vote
(Cheryl Miller, Webber, and someone else erroneously stated that the vote to postpone the arena parking decision was approved) Chris became upset over the question and asked why he was asked about that??? Hilarity ensued…

To be fair,
How bad was Grant’s rant before that question? The man can go on a tear. I heard it was livid, even for Peaches.
HarveySpecter - February 10, 2012
It was pretty bad.
Grant’s rant was all about it, and before that it’s pretty much all he’s talked about and asked people to talk about since the show started. I think that’s what got Chris heated. I think it’s the most viable explanation as to why he got so mad so fast.
ina_118 - February 10, 2012
I don’t blame Weber in the least. Napear is a total asshole
ExPFCWintergreen - February 10, 2012
Listening to CWebb towards the end, it definitely seems like he has beef with Grant.
Kind of annoying now that Grant is acting innocent in the whole thing. He claims that there’s no way that CWebb was listening to the show before hand. But let’s say CWebb was listening, Grant was being his usual self bagging on TNT and CWebb. I would be offended too.
ina_118 - February 10, 2012
This is Napear’s history catching up to him. I distinctly remember him torching Webber when he first came to town. Anything Webber gives him is long overdue.
And let me guess – after the conversation 1140 screened the calls to allow all of Peach’s sycophants to back him up?

swoosh91 - February 10, 2012
Well, I just listened to it..
My opinion is that Chris probably felt like he was being called out by Grant Napear thinking Grant was saying, if Chris Webber was being more “involved” with the Arena, the misunderstanding would have never happened. And then thats what led Chris to saying “Who is the one that went on national TV and told everyone to keep the Kings, to get this done, was that me? oh, yea, it was huh?” … I think Chris went TOO far… but again, I DIDNT hear Grants rant before he called… but from what im getting from you guys, it sounds to me like Grant was saying people shouldn’t talk if they don’t know the information and aren’t involved enough… And when Chris Webber is told he isnt involved enough in SACRAMENTO anytime…thats going to PISS him off, im sure..
Just my thoughts though… I hate what I heard though.
Tyro18 - February 10, 2012
In my opinion, Chris didn’t go far enough. He has every right to call out that asshole in stronger terms than he did. I wouldn’t have been able to be as courteous as Weber.
ExPFCWintergreen - February 10, 2012
Good for C-Webb
Napear’s a hack who’s basically tenured into his job…
otis29 - February 10, 2012 via mobile
on the radio, perhaps
But I think he does a nice job with PBP for the Kings.
RJinFairOaks - February 10, 2012
I do too
I would like him to just be that though. Despite anyone’s opinion on him, listening to him as a PBP guy is better than most and it’s just how, IMO, watching Kings basketball has become. It would be strange to not listen to Grant and Jerry calling almost all of the Kings games.
raiderking21 - February 10, 2012
Chris called into the show on his OWN time, and all Grant wants to do is attack him for a mistake his producers likely made.
He was right to hang up. He called to talk about the city, the fans support, and how much he loves the sense of community we’ve established here as Kings fans. He did not call to get questioned about misinformation.
He called on his own time, and the subject should have been the Kings staying in Sacramento, not a beration over semantics. That was important, but the Kings and the fans spoke for themselves, and Chris (as well as everybody on TNT) getting the information wrong regarding putting the parking measure up for a public vote does not change the outcome of our future in the slightest.
Grant is an asshat, always will be, and he needs to treat the man with respect. Chris has nothing but love for Sacramento, and I’m sure if he were aware of the correct facts, he wouldn’t have made the statement. Keep in mind that the vote JUST happened, and Chris is hardly involved in the political side of the arena talks. He is heavily involved in the business side, and if Grant wanted to open with that, I’m sure Chris would have been cordial.
I don’t blame Chris one bit.
VenomySnicket - February 10, 2012
Okay don't blame Chris at all and think this is all meaningless. However, having said that
You can tell Chris was ready to do what he did right when he called and Grant wasn’t attacking him with the question. Yes Grant was tearing into him for a solid 2 hours and I’m sorry but no way Webber didn’t get wind of that (believe it or not but he might still know people here and might have been in contact with them recently … given he was just in town last night).
wallywagon11 - February 10, 2012
That Chris was ready to rip Grant made me all the more elated. Grant is the one whose integrity over the last 20-plus years should be called into question regularly. Grant is the one who not only takes swipes at players — mostly when they are out of town and can’t answer back — but he also is abusive toward ordinary Kings fans who make the mistake of calling into his putrid show with an opinion he doesn’t share.

Maybe we should get their address and send hard copy letters?
screaming from all angles?

I intend to be there
but I admit a tendency to wimp out every now and then.
For all of us who are unsure , what is the address of the city council and what time do the meetings start (maybe this should be included in post).

It's on I Street between 9th and 10th. Pretty sure it's 915 I Street.
Would strongly recommend grabbing a coffee at Naked Coffee before because you will be bored to hell.
The session begins at 6:00pm but considering the Parking is the ninth item on the agenda, they likely won’t be discussing it until somewhere around 6:40 to 7:00pm.
