Sacramento City Council Votes Unanimously To Enter Negotiations With Parking Bidders

The Sacramento City Council has voted unanimously to allow the city to enter negotiations with 11 firms seeking to win the contract to operate Sacramento's downtown parking facilities in exchange for an upfront payment that would contribute half or more of the funding needed to build a new entertainment and sports complex at the arena.

A week ago, the council narrowly defeated a bid to have the entire parking plan put on the June ballot, which would have halted progress and likely sent the Kings to a new city, given that the NBA's deadline for an arena funding plan is March 1. The council will next take up the issue on February 28, when a term sheet between the city, the league and operator AEG could be up for approval. That vote is expected to be more narrow, depending on how high the parking revenue comes in.

Stay tuned. February 28 is going to be a huge night for the future of the Sacramento Kings.

Some discussion in Exhibit G's FanShot.

Wallywagon you are so weird!!!
It was encouraging to be there and see so many fellow supporters of this issue

But the battle is FAR from won. We need to be there in just as great or greater numbers on February 28th. Props to all who attended.

In other news

Ashby can be my valentine any day.

She's kinda hot in person.

In a understated manner.

Boys

don’t piss her off

I'm sure she's checking the forums right now. :p
We saw her husband

she probably is (funny internet face here).
We kid councilwoman Ashby, we kid.

I enjoyed his comment on Barry White, dimmed lights and candles.
She almost deserves a statue next to KJ if this all passes

She’s almost quoted STR word for word in her arguments the second they agreed to not ignore Natomas.

Not all of her is understated though.
I was there

It was anticlimatic when Sheedy announced she was going to vote yes before the speakers talked. There was an anti lady there who cried at how adversely this was going to affect her life and every single "fact’ she stated as to why was wrong. There were a lot of weird speakers on other topics, but no singing so I was bummed. Brought a Harmonica is case a jam broke out. I was not chosen to speak, probably good for our side.
On the 28th be there by 5 if you really want to get it. It was 90% us.

Watched online

the second I heard Sheedy for it, I said to myself, well… this conversation is over…

However, the unspoken stat of the night was the fact that there was 6 or 10? counter arguments towards the arena and 30!!! Pro arena speakers!

Lets make this 2 counter and 40 anti in 2 weeks… Be there EARLY!

I wholeheartedly agree...

SHOW UP EARLY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Were you the old geezer talking about “probes”?

This should be the hashtag...

Show up early!!!

I'm going to twitter Carmichael Dave now.

You’ll probably figure out my twitter handle, but it’s all good. LOL

Are you trying to keep your twitter handle a secret?

Kind of goes against the twitter philosophy ;)

@askbucknaked

haha

Nice lol
Carmichael Dave was cracking up

…when I intro’d myself.

I want my BINGO damn it!!!!!!!!!!
I liked the Bingo guy
Me too. I envision that being me in 40 years
I was muting it during opposers during the Kings game

because I knew it would piss me off more than stimulate an actual debate, which one was the BINGO guy? Mike? I love Mike, I remember back when he was FOR an arena because someone would have to clean the bathrooms, now apparently he’s against it because it would bring crack babies to the community….

I forget his name, but he was an older gentleman who spoke earlier in the evening regarding a different topic.
I know who you are talking about now

He wasn’t the one who brought up the Ebola virus, right?

No if I remember correctly he had several newspaper clipping on various topics
Some lady did bring up Bubonic Plague though.
LOL!

I saw your twitter update and linked it to who was talking at the time… Can’t battle the bubonic plague!! the arena deal is dependent on it!

Were you the one with the Beard and Casspi jersey?
It's serious business man!!

Build an arena…? You create crack babies…
Those crack babies? infest the ebola virus?

after that, the just love to recreate the ebonic plague!

3 Times he spoke!

It’s boring to be retired I guess.

Oh and the crack babies did come up but I couldn't understand him.
Bingo guy is great
He is mandatory on the 28th or I'm not showing up
Wally were you the guy in the suit sitting next to the guy with the little kid?
I am an International Man of Mystery!

or actually wasn’t there.

Oh okay

Just thought I’d check

I was stage right about 2-3 rows behind a lot of you guys

I WAS the old geezer asking to be probed

What time did you get there?
5:35

and it was about 2/3rds full

Here we 5:00???

It would be awesome if us Kings fans could fill this thing out before the #NaySayers could even get there on the 28th

I'm game. See you there.
I can't be there much earlier due to work.

I can be there by 5:00 on the 28th… the 21st if I must..

JUST REMEMBER...

…it’s a slooooooooooooow ass security line, one metal detector. 5pm should do it, and force all the enemy out into the overflow area.

You might have been in line right behind me.

Hahaha

metal plate?
I wish I knew what that meant
sorry I thought you said they were probing you

assumed you were setting off the metal dectors. Starting to realize maybe you just like inviting probings ;)

I was searching for a clever response

but they all get me the ban hammer

I got it.
total sidenote

but finally see the website where you get a bunch of your random gifs from. Not going to lie, kind of a cool website. Granted, completely girly but cool.

You should've said hello

though I get a bit shy with strangers, if you’d have said who you were . . . .

Wish I could've met you ElRon, maybe on the 28th

The one lady you’re talking about, is she the one who was talking about how we should pay for an arena because we can pay for special T-shirts?

That would be her

how many freaking T-shirts = $406, 000, 000?

Yea I liked her suggestion to make the players pay for it.
And the Maloofs rich friends

Ha! The Maloofs don’t have friends silly Pink Shirt lady.

So sadly true lol
I will introduce myself then

I saw you or at least who I think is you

If you can't find Akis on the 28th

Just introduce yourself to Jimmy Kimmel.

U-F-ING-NANIMOUS

Now we just need the numbers to work themselves out. If they can hammer out the details, it will be a strong yes vote. If not, we’re in trouble.

Two weeks everybody!!!

GREAT NIGHT!

Big shout out to everyone who was there! Met a couple people but if you were there and I didn’t meet you, I’m saddened. We rocked guys!

Everyone killed it with their speeches, especially Kevin, Hamm and Blake. Great job dudes.

Also – CRACK BABIES!

Ohhhhhh - thanks anyway ;P
Did you speak?!

Because if you did, then you kicked butt too.

Red shirt, green tweed jacket, bald spot

The one who made the ‘adequetely manage the decay’ reference

That was a very profound presentation.

Shout out to you and everyone who got up there and put your words out there. Everyone obviously had really worked on what they were saying and it really showed at a time we really needed it.

Crack was so 2005.

Now it’s all prescription.

Guys we can not rest until Bingo is made available for one and all. And no tax dollars!!!!!
Would have been ok with zero post game thread to be honest...

Sacramento won this round and Sacramento deserves a dance thread….

Our next battle is the 28th….

I will say

that the anti arena lady in green brought up some legitimate questions that hopefully KJ and co. are working to address.

Yes she did

But the thing is, the council was already going to look to address those very issues, as they should. They shouldn’t vote for an arena plan without doing so, and I think they already have a little bit of an idea on how to do it.

True, but at least she was somewhat coherent and bringing up valid issues, unlike any other anti ESC speakers
Her questions were great

but the answers to them no one knows yet.
I really want the arena but my yes vote really doesn’t come until I hear the answer to 3 questions.
1) is there enough money from parking to make it viable?
2) is the general fund protected
3) is the city protected from cost overruns?
All 3 of these need to be yes for me or I am just being selfish. From everything I have heard I am 90% confident they all will be a yes. 28th we will know.

Agreed on all accounts
And these objections are totally valid

I don’t think anyone here wants to city to put itself in a bad position.

Bleh, I've thought a lot about that

the $9mil they are talking about, though not insignificant, is just a small portion of the $362 million of the general fund it goes into and.even less a piece of the total $812 million dollar budget, about 1.1%.

Worst case seems to me that we only recover most of that $9mil on an annual basis but we end up with a new City Owned facility and spur massive development into the railyards increasing our tax base.

Not that I think that's a great talking point to the council
I think some of the anti crowd definitely got some good questions in.

Questions I think the council has already heard, but it’s good to see the citizens are concerned enough to bring them up. It’s helped keep the cost of the project down. As long as they’re bringing up relevant and legitimate questions, I appreciate their presence.

If they’re just there to say BLAH BLAH CITY BUYING ARENA FOR THE MALOOFS, then that’s not helpful.

Blah Blah, have a bake sale!
Here We Fundraise!!!
The comment about our TShirts got me

Look at these people, with their shirts, they can pay for shirts, then they can pay for the arena!

Put down the crack pipe baby. I mean lady.
Holy crap did everyone see the Knicks ending?

LINSANITY!!!

Haven't seen it but heard he hit the game winning three. Unbelievable
I still think STR needs to focus more on Sacramento's victory

Than the King’s loss….

I was there...great to be a part of the movement

I especially liked the unity and whoever brought the shirts, props…

It was cool that we got together for a group picture as well. I agree with the speeches that were given, everybody did an excellent job. The individuals that spoke for us were diverse in gender, race and age and I think that is important for the council to see that we represent the diverse population that resides in Sacramento and not just a punch of “punk kids” who like basketball. Everybody who spoke was as diverse as the speeches they gave, great representation.

I am still amazed on how much ignorance there is out there amongst the opposition. There has to be a better way to #HereWeInform. I was also dissapointed to see that most of those who were in opposition and spoke left before they got to hear from us.

Like I said before, everybody who spoke did a great job but I especially liked the speech given by the guy who referenced the democratic and republican conventions being held at arenas and how much revenue they brought in, good job of making the point relatable to politicians. Finally, I think Kevin Fippin also gave an excellent speech about being involved in a “grass movement” and having pride about living in Sacramento.

Props to all who attended and let’s rock it on the 28th!!!!

I was also dissapointed to see that most of those who were in opposition and spoke left before they got to hear from us

These people are unreachable.

Ya'll represent well !!!! Thank you!!
I am watching this on CBS 13 News right now. Shows crowd clapping.

Where did the fans come from in the matching white shirts with “Fans” written on the back?

i don't know there was about 30 or 40 of them

I saw them passing them out

It's an actual group.

Fund Arena Now Sacramento

They were the ones that showed up to the December meeting with the jerseys and ripped them off to show the shirts.

They were also the ones who crashed a January city council meeting without the arena on the agenda just to remind the council they were there.

Very well organized group.

Looked very organized from what little I saw.

It’s a group of people led by @SactownMike0476 . He has really great ideas and I am proud to be one of the original #FANS (I was Jobs from the first unveiling)

David Aldridge on Seattle/Sacramento wanting a team..
Whatever assistance the NBA has provided either city has been kept under wraps. The Commish, publicly, separately washed his hands of both situations, though the league is viewed by many in Seattle as complicit in allowing Bennett to leave.
“We haven’t heard a word” from the NBA, Fong said. “They’re just waiting to see if this is something to be engaged in. And I get that.”
And the clock ticks toward zero. Soon, the music will stop, and someone will be left without a chair to sit in. There are only so many teams to go around. For now, the Kings are still Sacramento’s, to keep or lose.
“I think the council will take care of its business,” Fong said. “When people ask me if this is going to happen, as a veteran of these efforts, I like to say, ‘Boy, we haven’t hit no yet.’ And that’s as good as yes.”
There is no way the NBA isn't working big time with Sac right now
You are correct sir.

There is an Ace, or at least a King, up KJ’s sleeve.

You devil

I demand you impart your wisdom upon us in this public forum!

I'm in the Burkle line
I am also in the Burkle line
they've had people on the ground here for quite some time now
SO close...

That just cracks me up

I have no idea why though.

Me neither! Just hits my funny bone. haha
I was there

In my white #FANS shirt!

Fund
Arena
Now
Sacramento

Looked pretty awesome seeing you guys en masse.

Today's letter to Council (everyone should keep emailing them)

I know a lot of you are uncomfortable with a 50 year parking lease (although I am not sure what is going to go so terribly wrong in 2044 that hasn’t gone wrong prior to that). But there is an obvious solution, an opt-out at whatever time period you select.

As an example, say you are offered 270 million up front for a 50 year lease and 220 for a 30, you could choose to put in an opt-out option in the 50 year lease at the 30 mark where you just pay a pre-determined cost, say 60 million. You are free of your contract and have made almost as much as you would in a straight 30 year deal.

One huge advantage to this even if you end up opting out; The ESC is built and the downtown railyards are revitalized.

You may have to figure out how to come up with the 60 million in 2044, but I repeat Sacramento’s new heart of the city is complete and the economy revitalized.

This deal hinges on 3 points to me;

1) Is there enough money from the parking to make the deal viable?

2) Is the 9 million in the general fund protected?

3) Is the city protected from cost overruns ?

If all three of these answers are yes, this is a no brainer, and Sacramento wil be well on its way to becoming the great city it can be.

Thanks for your time.

As I said earlier

An absolute guarantee on every cent of that $9mil is being over rated. It amounts to about 1% of the City budget and the future benefits in fees, taxes etc.. on the Railyard development will blow that out of the water.

I think some of them need the (at least) symbollic coverage

to explain their vote to their constituents (even if it is just moved from another part of the current budget).

yeah they have to protect it

considering it’s an election plus that was the promise that was made

I'll be direct...this is a Wally question

They are having a live chat at the Bee and Lillis just said the Maloofs have to repay the 70 million if they leave the faciltiy. I thought it was if the left Sacramento.
a) Is that true?
b) That adds up to 150 million from the NBA/Kings (only 80 of with will be applied to the Arena), how can the Maloofs come up with that?

I'll be sexy

damn it, you are going to make me read the darn lease agreement? Curse you (shaking fist in the air). Give me a few minutes.

Sorry, I need to put you on the payroll

2 Zillerbucks a month and you are salary so be used to OT

Sorry apparantly the City has moved all of the documents that were released with the Grand Jury report

You can find the lease agreement between the city and the Kings pretty easily on their website. Here is the Team Owner’s Relocation Assurancee Agreement which was not as easy to find.

Anywho, it is my very not expert opinion that the Maloofs are required to payoff the remaining bond indebtedness if the Kings were to relocate away from Sacramento. On page 10 of the Team Owner’s Assurance Agreement, it states that the Kings owners have made a covenant not relocate the Kings and that they agree they will not relocate the Kings from “Sacramento, California” to another venue if the city obligation is not yet satisfied.

However, that being said, most likely the loan has to be dealt with now just from a practical standpoint.
I would think at the very least the city

woul want the Maloofs to deed their land to the city so they have more flexibility in Natomas. This would reduce the loan amount by 20-40 million.
I am now going to go read the stuff you posted so I can educate myself a bit more. Thanks for all your help and expertise, I will call you if I need help with the big words.

Sorry to be back so quick

do you take the word venue on the first page of Recitals part C to mean arena or city? It is kind of an ambiguous term and is not clearly defined later as a lot of the terms were.

it's a little ambiguous but they keep mentioning "Sacramento, California"
I notice the "put option" is clearly defined as

Sacramento

they would likely have to more than that
