Jason Jones of the Sacramento Bee reports that DeMarcus Cousins will miss the Kings' Friday game against the Detroit Pistons due to back spasms. Given that the visit to Motor City is the most winnable game of the six-game road trip that the Kings are currently on, this is bad news for Sacramento.
Cousins has been the team's leading rebounder and No. 3 scorer. He had a rough game in a blow-out loss to the New York Knicks on Wednesday, but sprung for 28 points and 17 rebounds against the Chicago Bulls on Tuesday. In his place, expect either J.J. Hickson or Chuck Hayes to start, and for Travis Outlaw and perhaps Donte Greene to get more minutes up front. Hassan Whiteside, who got his first four minutes of the season in garbage time on Wednesday, could be called upon, too.
The Kings have Saturday off, and visit the Cleveland Cavaliers on Sunday.

No Cousins and more J.J. Hickson

I agree with this sentiment.
As a Pistons fan, I really wanted to see Monroe destroy Cousins :-).

I'll have you know, I haven't touched the reefer in DAYS!
Beer on the other hand, well I’ve had a few. Good to hear from one of your fellow posters that Cousins will try and tough it out. But I don’t want to hear any excuses when Monrobocop gives Cousins a Detroit City welcome!
The Boourns - February 17, 2012
We'll just see about that.

Im thinking Cousins is feeling pretty welcome in the motor city , lol.
Just kidding bro . Dont feel bad DMC is the real deal .

Whiteside is not a real basketball player
He’s just really tall
Allbenji - February 17, 2012 via mobile
Add him to the list of guys who fooled Petrie
Slam_Dunk - February 17, 2012
As a second rounder, I'm not holding Whiteside against Petrie
Low risk, High reward
raiderking21 - February 17, 2012 via mobile
They paid him he same as a first rounder
Slam_Dunk - February 17, 2012
I don't think the $762k he's making this season is really killing the team
Considering they were chasing the salary minimum most of the offseason.
Hard to get pissed at Petrie over Whiteside. Any GM that gets evaluated based on second round picks is going to look bad.
otis29 - February 17, 2012
My feelings exactly
He’s actually getting paid less than Tyler Honeycutt too.
raiderking21 - February 17, 2012 via mobile
I think if you look at the last two seasons
You’d have to be pretty happy with Petrie’s second round selections. One hit, one miss, one still to be determined.
otis29 - February 17, 2012
Petrie still has some draft prowess
Hard to find serviceable players that late but Petrie did it with IT and could possibly have another one in Honeycutt.
And I’m referring to both rounds when I say draft prowess
raiderking21 - February 17, 2012 via mobile
No argument about IT
Slam_Dunk - February 17, 2012
I'm not ready to call Whiteside a miss
He has tons of potential and we haven’t seen him in the NBA (outside of those few min last year).
I would hate for Whiteside to leave and become the next BJ Mullens.
SharkKings49 - February 17, 2012
We saw him 4 minutes this year.
Slam_Dunk - February 17, 2012
And a very lackluster four minutes it was...
raiderking21 - February 17, 2012 via mobile
6 min in his career total
The most meaningfull minutes he ever played was in the GSC, which was like a summer league allstar game.
I’m not saying hes the answer, but I wish that during a blow out (or when we have injuries) we could play him for a good 10 min and see exactly what we have. Maybe do this for 2-4 games straight and see if playing time can get him going.
SharkKings49 - February 17, 2012
Bad for Whiteside
We aren’t getting blown out as often as in the past.
As long as the team feels there’s a chance to win a game (and you never know with this team, considering some of the deficits they’ve overcome), you won’t be seeing any of Hassan.
otis29 - February 17, 2012
He needs a more fire and hustle. 4 minutes isn't much but he didn't appear to enthused.
Bill2 - February 17, 2012
After four grueling minutes of play:
Reporter: Hassan, any truth to the rumors that you’re not enthused
Hassah: Yeah, I’ve heard people say that about me. I just need more fire in my belly, you know. But, I’m working on that.
Slam_Dunk - February 17, 2012
Right on S_D
Bill2 - February 17, 2012
I suppose
I’ve given up on him, to be honest. I should have never read his Twitter.
otis29 - February 17, 2012
That's true for the majority of athletes
I think that’s one of the many reasons I don’t like JJ
SharkKings49 - February 17, 2012
Probably
I got into the Twitter thing during the summer, and not once (that I saw) did he talk about working out or basketball in general. I think he talked more about cereal.
otis29 - February 17, 2012
I sure wish
That he would have secured that one rebound vs NY, where he was alone under the basket and the ball bounced right over his head. 7’ Tall and crazy athletic… yet he lost the ball in the lights and Jimmer picked it up.
Jimmer outrebounded Whiteside who was alone under the basket.
Hardly - February 17, 2012
But he really seems like a bonehead
It’s everyone Else’s fault that he’s not very good yet . . .
lietothegirls - February 17, 2012
You mentioned BJ Mullens
So I had to go look up his numbers. Which made me look up Charlotte’s roster. I think I’d rather have dinner with Sandy Sheedy than watch that basketball team.
Thanks Shark!
otis29 - February 17, 2012
that team is like the 08-09 Kings
but instead of Kevin Martin you have old and injured Maggette.
wallywagon11 - February 17, 2012
And they are spending $9 million more on salaries this season than we are
Talk about tough sledding, being a fan of that team.
otis29 - February 17, 2012
Pretty sure though they will be shedding quite a bit of those salaries soon though
really curious what happens with Augustine
wallywagon11 - February 17, 2012
I think they are worse than that Kings team
That team’s hopes rely on Kemba and whoever they get next year.
SharkKings49 - February 17, 2012
and Biyombo and Henderson
don’t get me wrong you are right but those Kings were relying on JT, Hawes, and whoever they got next year (and Kevin Martin obviously but that was kind of the point of my commment, basically kind of like the Kings in 08-09 except replace Martin with Maggette)
wallywagon11 - February 17, 2012
Heck
I think I would rather watch Phantom Menace in 3D
wallywagon11 - February 17, 2012
Nooooooooooo!
lietothegirls - February 17, 2012
seriously, saw that opening day
thank God I wasn’t the idiot of the group who waited in line for like 10 hours to get the tickets for it (although did have to sit in line for what seemed like forever to get in to the theatre).
wallywagon11 - February 17, 2012
Good god - Why?
But the 3-D stuff makes me a bit woozy so . .
and I was over that movie pretty quickly after the in the next tw that idiot whined his way through to turning into Vader.
“You are ready to be a Jedi” Really? Seriously? With that emotional wreckage?
lietothegirls - February 17, 2012
No I mean opening day when it came out in 1999 when nobody had a clue just how horrid it was
I went in there blindsided. Zero clue on the badness I was about to witness. I was in high school and had to sit in a frickin line outside for like 6 hours with a group of girls whose parents were doctors and thus they felt obligated to tell everyone who dared have a cigarrette that they were killing everyone.
And that movie was supposed to be the payoff for the suffering.
wallywagon11 - February 17, 2012
I think they should still make the three "postquels"
But only if George Lucas is dead and they let Peter Jackson direct.
otis29 - February 17, 2012
I wouldn't recommend watching this right now
but here is pretty funny video about the crapiness of Phantom Menace. The guy has a weird sense of humor (creepy, purposefully obviously screws up names and stuff) but it’s actually way more entertaining than the actual movie.
However, long as hell and 9 parts (links on the right). I would have never expected myself to watch it but darn it it cracked me up one afternoon when had time to myself and basically wanted to do nothing.
wallywagon11 - February 17, 2012
Ahh
I think I went the 2nd night and came out saying, OK . . .OK I guess. Nice effects. . . .
lietothegirls - February 17, 2012
I really wanted to like it
You know how that goes
lietothegirls - February 17, 2012
Speaking of that
My daughter has gotten into the original Star Wars movies but hasn’t seen any of the newer ones (the prequels I guess you’d call them). But she wants to see this at the theaters.
It feels so wrong. But I’ve taken her to see lots of bad kid’s movies (hello, Tooth Fairy), so I’m torn on this one.
otis29 - February 17, 2012
tough call
I can’t believe your daughter somehow avoided the newer ones yet saw and was able to appreciate the olds ones.
wallywagon11 - February 17, 2012
I forced her to watch the old ones :)
otis29 - February 17, 2012
Good for you
Episode I gets a pass I guess but the other two were awful.
lietothegirls - February 17, 2012
I dunno
don’t get me wrong they were all bad but Episode I had the whole weird blood stream thing, the sitting, the sitting, the beaucracy, the nonsensical plotline, the “let’s gas them to death but let them out to shoot their bodies” logic, it was pretty bad.
wallywagon11 - February 17, 2012
I haven't watched it in 10 years I think
maybe a few less.
lietothegirls - February 17, 2012
Unfortunately
I have a nephew who grew up with the new ones. Given the fact kids are stupid and like anything where anything annoying happens, I get to watch the new movies again … and again … and again.
wallywagon11 - February 17, 2012
Yeah, I was in the same boat with my cousins
except the movie’s were Howard the duck and Beetlejuice. Still cant stomach the idea of watching either one.lol
9K1NGS6 - February 17, 2012
okay now this is actually hilarious
and why in the end technically although I don’t like the new Star Wars films, I can understand the appeal to kids (although again, kids like stupid things and yes I was a kid who liked stupid things)
Your cousins were around my age then because I was one of those kids who liked watching Howard the Duck and Beetlejuice.
wallywagon11 - February 17, 2012
Beetlejuice is a great film...
and the duck-on-duck sex scene in Howard the Duck is when I first figured out what sex-making was…

caseycheesecake - February 17, 2012
The one advantage, and I do mean THE ONE ADVANTAGE to watching Phantom Menace in 3D
is that it makes me think I can reach right out and punch the shit out of Jake Lloyd.
Mike Garza - February 17, 2012
when people complain about a bad first round pick, it's not because of the money but the wasted opportunity
when you are down to the 30s it’s very much a crap shoot
wallywagon11 - February 17, 2012
My reference of money was to the low risk / high reward post by raiderking
If Perie were looking for low risk, they didn’t have to pay Hassan the same amount that went to a first rounder, when he was picked as a second rounder. The team wasn’t obligated to do that. It wasn’t a huge difference, but it gave the message that they valued him same as they would a first round pick.
Considering that he has played a total of 6 minutes, salary-wise he has done pretty well for himself on a minute-per-minute playing time basis. His four minutes this season were in garbage time.
As to the previous argument of picking low risk for high reward, we have yet to see a glimpse of the high reward. As to your argument Wally, pertaining to wasted opportunity, I don’t recall who Petrie passed over to get Whiteside. It pretty much is a crap shoot when you get down so low in the draft. I do recall that Whiteside was predicted to go 12th (I think), but had some “red flags” over some ADD rumors. So a lot of teams passed him by.
Slam_Dunk - February 17, 2012
The high reward part I mentioned was about the potential Whiteside was thought to have relative to his own red flags
Also, as Otis mentioned above, 762k isn’t crippling and I’m not sure that’s even first round money. Honeycutt makes more (around 780k) so I’m not sure what to tell you.
When Petrie made the pick, it was so low that it would’ve been great had he worked out, but it’s not really something that can be used to critique Petrie.
raiderking21 - February 17, 2012 via mobile
He was paid, I believe, the amount he would have been paid had
he been picked 12th. He was all bummed out because he wasn’t picked in the first round and the team decided to pay him a larger sum, I guess as some sort of goodwill gesture. I don’t have a link for that. I am just going on my memory.
Slam_Dunk - February 17, 2012
Don't remember that
I’m going on his actual salary right now which is second round money.
If that is true, then it was only last year, but I don’t know about that.
raiderking21 - February 17, 2012 via mobile
I believe his contract was front loaded
So his first year was worth about what a 12th pick would get. But I’m pretty sure the 12th pick this year got a lot more than $762k.
LOUiECOG - February 17, 2012
oh just 3 times as much money and guaranteed for 3 years
wallywagon11 - February 17, 2012
Nope not even close
he would have been paid over $7.5 million guaranteed for his first 3 years.
And they didn’t make the offer because of goodwill. Pretty obvious they were looking at the Bird Rights
wallywagon11 - February 17, 2012
According to ShamSports
Whiteside’s contract was a 4 year/3.2 mil contract. 730k last year, 762k this year, 850k next year, and 915k the fourth year. The last two years unguaranteed.
raiderking21 - February 17, 2012 via mobile
crap
yeah the 4th year is completely unguaranteed. The 3rd year is not fully guaranteed though, just forgot how much of it is guaranteed.
wallywagon11 - February 17, 2012
actually I dunno the 3rd year could be fully unguaranteed
either way it ensures they lock him up long enough for Bird Rights if he is legit and all it took was 2 years minimum salary guaranteed. That isn’t much of a risk for a guy who was considered a top talent in his draft but had red flags all over the place.
wallywagon11 - February 17, 2012
Would've included a link
Unfortunately, I can’t do that from my phone.
raiderking21 - February 17, 2012 via mobile
I'm sorry but $762K and $809K (with a final year fully unguaranteed) is simply not remotely close to any kind of risk in the NBA
and of course the Kings weren’t obligated to do it, they could have done just one year and if he was good he could just up and walk and the team can’t offer him more than anybody else. They could have done just two year and if he was good he could up and walk and the team can’t offer him more than anybody else. And if he is good enough for the third year and an extension, hey guess what after three years the Kings have his Bird Rights, what a coinicidence.
It was a very small bet with very little to lose. Don’t get me wrong though, if Petrie does in fact have a flux capacitor in one of his cars then perhaps he should have used it to actually see what would have become of Whiteside.
wallywagon11 - February 17, 2012
I start out by making a little joke about Whiteside:
Add him to the list of guys who fooled Petrie.
Then it turns into this whole big discussion implying that I have somehow made this into a big risk on Petrie’s part. I haven’t.
Slam_Dunk - February 17, 2012
Well ...
wallywagon11 - February 17, 2012
Right -
I was explaining to you my reference of money, which was in response to raiderking. I also mention in there that whatever difference Petrie may have made in setting his salary it wasn’t a huge difference.
Drafting players is a relatively cheap way to pick up potentially talented players without a huge outlay of money, hence minimal risk. This is one of the reasons we as a team want to get them. The team hasn’t shelled out a lot for players, so getting someone like Tyreke or Cousins at a fraction of the amount we would pay for a player of similar talent is a way we can upgrade our team for minimal risk. So, I get that. That’s all.

otis29 - February 17, 2012
Great season is putting it lightly
16.6 points on 52% shooting, 9.7 boards, 2.4 assists, 1.4 steals and just 2.9 fouls in 33 minutes. He’s gonna be a good player for a long time. Golden State is going to be seriously kicking themselves on that decision to take Udoh over him.

SharkKings49 - February 17, 2012
Yeah. I was shocked too.
But, I thought that perhaps they were seeing something everyone else missed. But, that didn’t turn out to be the case. Perhaps it was the same person who missed recognizing Lin’s skills.
Slam_Dunk - February 17, 2012
When did Jeremy Lin suddenly become John Stockton??
Shizzo - February 17, 2012
John Stockton was before my time as a basketball fan so I am unfamiliar with his story.
I can look it up on Wiki, but I don’t think that would truly capture the flavor of your question.
Slam_Dunk - February 17, 2012
Actually, to be honest...
Part of my intrigue regarding Jeremy Lin has to do with his ethnicity. I don’t like to think of myself as having any prejudices about people, but Jeremy Lin proved me wrong in an instant.
I admit, I didn’t really put Asian or Asian-Americans into the NBA equation. I considered Yao Ming an outlier and not typical of Asians in general because of his unusual height.
The 2011 Racial and Gender Report Card: National Basketball Association by Richard Lapchick shows that 1% of the players are Asian. That is a pretty insignificant number.
But, when I watched a highlight of Jeremy Lin, all of my biases, preconceptions, and prejudices about Asian or Asian Americans in NBA basketball flew out the window.
It makes me wonder if some of the decisions made about him, by scouts, recruiters, etc., in his career were influenced by an unconscious prejudice. I am not saying that is the case, only that I wonder if that may have been the case.
If his play can change my view so radically in a couple of minutes, could it change other people’s perception of Asian-Americans, I wonder.
So, I think his Asian ethnicity is part of the interest and fascination.
Slam_Dunk - February 17, 2012
I always wondered why there weren't more asian american, latin american, etc players
Until one day some old timers told me it was something I’ve never thought of before. It’s culture.
The cultural background of how people are raised and what type of communities they grow up in contribute to this. I feel that I’m a product of this as well. A lot of children of asian/latin ethnicities are just now, first generation born Americans. I feel like parents are heavily pushing their children to establish themselves academically as a priority over other activities. I suspect that in the next 20 years when these 3rd generation children are growing up things will change a bit and guys like Lin won’t be looked at as a anomaly.
Mad D - February 17, 2012
That's a good point.
I think culture does have a lot to do with this. As we can see, Lin also achieved academically, with a 4.2 GPA and gaining entry to Harvard. If the parents think the way to success is academics, they will focus on this. Lin may have a big effect on the next generation of children growing up watching him play in the NBA.
Slam_Dunk - February 17, 2012
This team is so unpredictable
I could see them either rallying a win with their best player out or letting Detroit take a massive dump on their faces.
Allbenji - February 17, 2012 via mobile
Tyreke's out too?
HeuristicLineup - February 17, 2012
I'm still a big Reke fan
But at this point I don’t think anyone can argue that Cousins isn’t our best player.
Aykis16 - February 17, 2012
No argument here.
Slam_Dunk - February 17, 2012
I agree
I more just felt like saying that. Tyreke’s had better games than Cousins, Cousins has been consistently better
HeuristicLineup - February 17, 2012
Someone asked me this at work yesterday
I went with Cousins. No hesitation. It was only after the discussion that I stopped and thought about it.
Exhibit G - February 17, 2012
I'd still say Reke is the better player
The team absolutely falls apart without him on the court. The team suffers without Demarcus, but Thompson still usually plays well enough for us to survive without him. If I’m the Kings and I want a score, I’m putting the ball in the hands of #13.
Thats not to say that Demarcus is poised to pass him; its probably going to happen, DMC is just way too talented.
Scirocco - February 17, 2012
I'd choose DMC also, no question
Shizzo - February 17, 2012
To many close games turn to blow outs
when he leaves the court
ElRonToro - February 17, 2012
To me, its a tie between the two..
Tyreke’s big games have meant more to our wins than DMC’s, but DMC has clearly been the most consistent.
Wonderchild - February 17, 2012
I've been saying since mid last year, head case and all
that Cousins will be the best player we’ve drafted since . . . . . since . . . .
lietothegirls - February 17, 2012
Pretty much ever, right?
otis29 - February 17, 2012
I predict massive dump.
The Kings are much better when Cousins is on the floor.
Aykis16 - February 17, 2012
Yeah, it's not even close
JJ, Hayes, Salmons, Outlaw, all the guys we thought would make us at least a bit better?
Nothing has been added.

He has the entire King’s roster on his back. I’m surprised his knees don’t ache and buckle.
Bill2 - February 17, 2012
Shitty news.
DiegoKing - February 17, 2012
Ughh...
It’s been a bad enough season so far. Good thing (if there is one) is that back spasm usually just need rest.
StevenG - February 17, 2012
Gotta think Hayes gets the start tonight to try and slow down Monroe
Let him get his burn.
This just means that Tyreke and Thornton will have to play extra aggresive, and not settle for jumpers.
Wonderchild - February 17, 2012
Seriously guys
I got this!

fffindeed - February 17, 2012
Hassan you silly goose!

DAMN IT SD!!!
fffindeed - February 17, 2012
I got totally reamed in a game thread one time when I wanted PW to pull him out of the game.
It seemed like everyone was defending him and saying how good he was, yada yada. I don’t know if people were just trying to give me a bad time for the fun of it or if they actually believed it.

But my expectations certainly do.
otis29 - February 17, 2012
anyone know when cousins got hurt?
Was it last game or practice?
Skeptic con Urquell - February 17, 2012
Only his feelings were hurt in that game.
lietothegirls - February 17, 2012
The UCDavis injury report tweet said "mid back spasms"
which I am guessing is just strain on the body (x10). A lot of teams’ bigs are constantly bumping him and playing really physical on him to get him riled up, but the guy has been a solid rock emotionally all season.
Now if it were “lower back spasms” then I might worry more about this lingering all season. Hopefully he is just out tonight, or at least out until the Heat game on Tuesday. He could really give Miami fits.
Wonderchild - February 17, 2012
Jason Jones reporting on twitter
that DeMarcus is going to test it out and give it a go tonight.
edm7 - February 17, 2012
Great news!
otis29 - February 17, 2012
Awesome!
I’ve been excited for the Cuz / Monroe matchup all season.
