I wish the Kings would #SayYes to Defense.

The Good:
1. DeMarcus Cousins
See Player of the Week
2. A New Starting Lineup!
John Salmons finally got benched. I'm not sure whether it was because of how well Isaiah (his replacement) had been playing or how terribly Salmons had been playing, but the fact of the matter is that it happened and I hope it's a lineup that's here to stay. Isaiah did a very good job playing with the starters in the 1st quarter in Detroit as the Kings had one of their best starts this year. Now I just wish we'd see that lineup to end games as well...
3. Ball Movement!
The Kings as a team have been doing a much better job of moving the ball, and had two games with 20+ assists this week alone. Our offense has been much better for it. Tyreke, Isaiah and Jimmer have all done a very good job of finding the open man, particularly right at the rim. I also like the job that DeMarcus and JT have done with their passing from the mid-post to cutters. The better ball movement also coincides with better off-the-ball movement by players too. It's much easier to get the ball to someone for a good shot that will result in an assist if those players make an attempt to get open in the first place.
4. Our Rookie Guards
The biggest bright spot of our second unit this season has been Jimmer and Isaiah. Despite being rookies, these two guys have been our best and most consistent bench players all season. They've both managed to overcome pretty bad shooting slumps to start the season to find their rhythm. The good thing is that they both still have a lot of room to grow. Jimmer has a bit of trouble when opposing teams apply pressure or double teams to him, but it's amazing that they already respect his shot that much. I wish our own players respected his shot that much as it seems he doesn't get rewarded with a pass often enough when he does get open. Isaiah has been really fun to watch, and his confidence and up-tempo game is contagious. He does need to learn to settle down at times, and he also can get into a bit of a chucking frame of mind (see New York game this week), but for the most part he's made the team better when he's been on the floor. Jimmer leads all our bench players in scoring with 8.3 points (4th on the team) and 2.1 assists (3rd on the team) in 21.6 minutes, while Isaiah has chipped in with 7.4 points (5th on the team, 2nd on the bench) and 2.5 assists (2nd on the team) in 17.6 minutes. I wish the rest of our bench would play as well as these two have.
5. Council Votes Unanimously to Continue on with the Arena vote.
The vote wasn't anything major, just to narrow down the list of companies that the city would be dealing with, but the support of all the fans that showed up was awesome, and it was even better when they voted unanimously in favor. There is one very big vote left, on February 28th, and I hope we can pack it again and achieve another favorable result. The fate of the Kings in Sacramento will likely be decided on that day.
The Bad:
1. Apathy in New York
Nobody played well in this game and nobody really seemed like they were trying to play well. The Kings just looked tired and as if they didn't care. Usually this team gets super hyped up for big games like this, so it was disappointing to see. Even Hassan Whiteside got to see playing time for just the 2nd time in his career, and he didn't look all that enthusiastic about it.
2. Fréé Donté
Donté has been the Kings most consistent wing this year. He's finally started rebounding like a 6'10 guy should, and he's being more conservative in his shot selection. He's shooting the greatest percentage of any of our wings from the field, and against Chicago he had 10 points and 4 rebounds in just 14 minutes. Yet he continues to see inconsistent minutes, and Travis Outlaw somehow usurped him in the rotation in the last two games. Greene didn't see the court at all vs. Detroit, when we could have used someone bigger and more athletic on Prince.
3. Free Tyler
I'm not sure Tyler Honeycutt is ready for consistent NBA minutes yet. But I'm at the point now where I know Salmons, Outlaw and Garcia are NOT going to get it done, so why not see what you have in a player like Honeycutt? Our other rookies have proven to be good producers, maybe Tyler will too if given the chance. We won't know if we can't see, and at this point I don't think we have anything to lose.
4. Tyreke's Jumper
Tyreke has improved his set jump shot. When he goes straight up and down and doesn't take the ball off-the-dribble, he has a pretty consistent stroke. But Tyreke rarely takes jumpers that aren't off the dribble. Here's a typical Tyreke jumper possession: Tyreke gets the ball at the three point line. Tyreke dribbles slowly, hunched forward towards the basket. Tyreke does a crossover and steps back into a fadeaway jumper. Clank. This week, he shot a combined 5-18 on shots outside of 16 feet, and that accounted for almost 36% of his shots. I know that Tyreke needs to add a jumper to his arsenal or he'll get too predictable, but I'd rather he not shoot until he figures out a consistent form.
The Ugly:
1. Defense
This team's defense is terrible, and this week wasn't any different. The Kings have a couple of players with the potential to be very good individual defenders, but so few of the players ever really seem to grasp the concept of good team defense. New York absolutely killed us in Pick and Rolls, and against Chicago and Detroit, the Kings let both teams penetrate at will, resulting in a lot of over-helping and open shots. If we had simply played average defense against Detroit and Chicago, we probably would have won both of those games. The Kings currently have the 28th worst Defensive Rating in the league, and give up the most points in the NBA. Defense needs to be a continued focus for this team, and everyone needs to buy in.
2. Giving away a victory to Detroit
Our execution down the stretch was just terrible. Tyreke deserves a lot of the blame for his decisions to try to play hero ball and take unnecessary jumpers, and our over-helping on defense led to wide open threes on the other end. John Salmons played most of the 4th quarter despite having shown absolutely no reason to be on the floor.
3. Offseason Acquisitions
(Note: I'm not counting Jimmer here, because I believe we would have taken him 7th even without the trade, and I'm not counting Marcus here, because we acquired him the season before and simply re-signed him as everyone expected we would).
John Salmons has had the worst season of his career, but it took 29 games, almost half the season, before he was finally kicked out of the starting lineup. He's shooting just 36% from the field and was just 4-18 in three games combined this week. His much vaunted defense has only shown up sporadically, and according to 82games.com, there is no difference in the Kings defense whether he is on the floor or off of it, and the offense has been much better with him off the floor. Synergy Sports rates him as the 2nd worst wing defender the Kings have (behind Francisco Garcia). He has earned his spot on the bench, and if the team were any better he probably wouldn't be playing at all.
Travis Outlaw was bad last year. He's been even worse this year. I don't understand why he has seemingly beat out Donté Greene for a rotation spot when Greene has been our most consistent wing player this year. Outlaw is shooting 28.9% for the year. You almost have to try to shoot that bad.
J.J. Hickson looked to be a promising acquisition, an athletic forward who could rebound and score in the low post. He's been anything but promising in Sacramento. He's shooting a mere 38.2%, way below his career average, because he insists on continuing to shoot jumpers. He's most effective near the rim, but he's only taking 1.9 attempts a game there.
Chuck Hayes is the hardest to bash for me because of the injuries that he's had to play through. I don't think we'll properly be able to gauge Hayes until next season. He's shown to be effective at defense and on the glass (he did a great job on Greg Monroe this week), but makes the offense worse when he's on the floor.
So aside from the draft, it looks like the Kings struck out completely in their offseason acquisitions this year. One or more of these guys are going to have to step up for the Kings to start playing better.
Player of the Week:
DeMarcus Cousins
23 PPG, .491 FG%, 12 RPG, 2 APG, 2 STL, 1 BLK in 32 MPG
The one thing I keep telling myself after every disappointing loss is that at least we have a future perennial All-Star, perhaps more, in Cousins. The guy keeps improving and he's become a force to be reckoned with in just his 2nd year in the league. This week he also started to show off his passing once again. His defense still needs a lot of work, as does his conditioning, but he does lead the league in Charges drawn. On offense, his mid-to-long range jumper has been incredibly consistent. He currently shoots 2.9 attempts from 16-23 feet, the same as Kevin Martin in Houston. They both also make the same percentage, at 48%. The next highest percentage in that area on the Kings belongs to Isaiah Thomas at 40%.

Question of the Week:
Has your opinion on Keith Smart changed from a couple of weeks ago? If so, what's different? For me, I still like the way he connects with the players, but I do have serious issues with his rotations.
And Nostradumbass Prediction for Next Week:
@ Cleveland 2/19 W (Cleveland has played decent basketball this year thanks to big seasons by Kyrie Irving and Anderson Varejao. Varejao however recently broke his wrist and is out for the foreseeable future. I predict a very big game from DeMarcus Cousins in a Kings victory)
@ Miami 2/21 L (We can't even guard Bill Walker or Steve Novak, how are we supposed to guard Dwyane Wade and LeBron James?)
@Washington 2/22 W (The Wizards have been playing better basketball as of late, but they're very inconsistent. Sacramento is a better team than the Wizards, and they should look to take advantage going into the long All-Star Break)

Question
“(Note: I’m not counting Jimmer here, because I believe we would have taken him 7th even without the trade…)”
I’m not so sure on this one. Petrie was really ready to draft Jimmer over Knight? I hope not.
LightningStrike5 - February 18, 2012
well considering at the time the rumor was that the Kings were really unimpressed with Knight and Westphal even publicly sounded less than impressed suggets perhaps otherwise
wallywagon11 - February 18, 2012
Huh
I don’t remember that rumor. That one musta flown over my head.
I think we’ll regret not taking Knight for years to come.
LightningStrike5 - February 18, 2012
I thought the exact same way on draft day, but I'm feeling better now that I've seen him play
He was a senior so he should be more poised, and he is and I like his BBIQ. Once he gets use to the on ball pressure. And, his teammates learn what to do when teams double team the ball, Jimmer is going to really spread the floor and help get easy baskets for others out of the double team.
HighTops - February 18, 2012
After watching Knight last night
I’m very convinced that Knight will become a far superior player than Jimmer.
LightningStrike5 - February 18, 2012
Do not judge any player by watching him
against the King’s defense
ElRonToro - February 18, 2012
If that were the case
we’d being calling Jeremy Lin the next CJ Watson
wallywagon11 - February 18, 2012
LOL
I laughed out loud
LightningStrike5 - February 18, 2012
I think Knight is a player.
He is a winner… Smart, cool and talented… He is only 20 years old and still is improving at a rapid rate… Give him a couple of years and I project an NBA all-star…
His D is solid, he can play point or 2… Poor Jimmer can just shoot. And that is a little suspect… I like Jimmer but he is no Brandon Knight.
big-cuz fan - February 19, 2012
That is just a big example of 1 of the things that are wrong with this organization
They put too much stock in the pre-draft team workouts. It’s ridiculous. Do they even scout these players before they come in for workouts?
On one hand Tyreke dominating Curry, Jennings, & Holiday got us Reke but I’m not sure any of those would have been a bad choice. Also DMC dominating Favors but DMC was seen as the better prospect before that. The only thing holding him from being the 2 or even 1 pick was his “red flags”
Knight was the better prospect. Everyone in the world knew it exept Geoff Petrie.
Allbenji - February 18, 2012 via mobile
Can we let these guys play a few seasons before we declare someone a better prospect than someone else?
Aykis16 - February 18, 2012
Ok
Allbenji - February 18, 2012 via mobile
Oh wait
Wouldn’t someone being a better prospect mean he is prospected to be better? I could be wrong but if that’s the case I’d say Knight is the better prospect. That doesn’t mean he’ll be the better player(although I think he will be) We WILL have to wait a few seasons to determine that.
Allbenji - February 18, 2012 via mobile
NEVER!
wallywagon11 - February 18, 2012
Yes
I believe they had Knight ranked 3rd behind Jimmer and Kemba.
Aykis16 - February 18, 2012
I thought that Knight was considered the only true PG of the 3, but JR was calling him a combo yesterday
HighTops - February 18, 2012
Where did you hear Knight was considered the only true PG?
All three had questions as to whether they were true PGs because all three were primarily scorers in college.
Aykis16 - February 18, 2012
I honestly thought that Euro big Philly took seemed higher on their draft board than Kemba
wallywagon11 - February 18, 2012
Vucevic out of USC
They really did like him. I think he was 3rd on the list behind Jimmer/Kemba. I’ve said it before, but from what I’ve gathered the Kings were interested in 1a. Jimmer 1b. Kemba or 2. Vucevic.
Aykis16 - February 18, 2012

wallywagon11 - February 18, 2012

Question:
Yes, my opinion of Smart is changing. As much as I like the way he connects with the players and the fact that they like him and respond well to him, there are growing doubts about some of his decisions.
He is still a relatively new head coach, without the benefit of working with the team as head coach at the beginning of the season. He has had to do a lot of things on the fly and didn’t get any say of what players he would be working with, so I have given him some leeway on these aspects. But, he seemed to be lagging on making his decisions to change his rotations. I don’t know if he is being influenced on the outside by Petrie or if this is all on him.
It seems like he is too attached to the idea that Salmons is a good player, regardless what is going on the court right now. It took him too long to bring him in off the bench and still he seemed to cling on to him too much in the Detroit game down the stretch. As to IT, I always felt that he didn’t give him a lot of credit. IT has had to work his butt off to get anything from Smart. Smart is slowly coming around and gave IT the start, but where was the confidence in him, after he had a great first quarter, down the stretch. Smart talks a lot about players needing to have confidence in each other. Well, it works both ways, Smart needs to show confidence in them. So, yeah. I am beginning to have a few doubts about Smart.
Adding, I am disappointed with his use of Outlaw and JJ. Hickson, especially over Donte. They have contributed very little, so I am confused by his decisions to go to these two players. I refrain from judgment about Jimmer and Chuck right now. I have mixed feelings about both of them.
Slam_Dunk - February 18, 2012
His lineup choices really confuse me at times
I believe it was the Chicago game where he went with a lineup of IT-Chuck-Donte-Frank-JJ for like 5 minutes. My first thought with this lineup was who is going to score? Just a strange mixture of guys that hadn’t played together probably at all, yet they’re getting big minutes together. He needs to figure out a way to have at least 2 of Tyreke, MT and DMC on the floor as much as possible, if possible.
outrider - February 18, 2012
Yes, almost every game, there has been some inexplicable period where he has a strange combination of players.
Slam_Dunk - February 18, 2012
Especially offensively
If we can’tstopanyone anyway, why not score?
And Donte’, I’ve never been a big supporter because of his inconsistancy, but the other options right now?
Donte’ should have the same opportunity to dissappoint us as the other guys.
lietothegirls - February 20, 2012
nice
write up! Defending Salmons makes little sense around here, but I believe his defensive awareness( opening to helpside, having good vision, and getting through picks; help and RECOVER…he rotates to stop penetration and then gets back to his guy…when Tyreke or Donte or Marcus help, they lose sight of their man; he forces the guy he is guarding from his comfort zone.

Any chance Petrie admits his mistake and tries to dispose of him before the trade deadline? Could he fetch a 2nd round pick? A team like Atlanta could probably use him as a 3rd or 4th big off the bench come playoff time. I know that’s selling low but I can’t really see them offering him the qualified offer this offseason based on both his and JT’s performance.

3. Free Whiteside
I’m not sure Hassan Whiteside is ready for consistent NBA minutes yet. But I’m at the point now where I know Hickson, Outlaw, and Hayes are NOT going to get it done, so why not see what you have in a player like Whiteside? Our other rookies have proven to be good producers, maybe Hassan will too if given the chance. We won’t know if we can’t see, and at this point I don’t think we have anything to lose.
chenp22 - February 18, 2012
I'm guessing that Smart wants him to learn the plays first.
It depends on how quickly he picks things up, there will be time for him to practice with the starters while Cuz is at the All-Star game.
HighTops - February 18, 2012
Whiteside looks like he could care less
From summer league last year he has shown no fire at all. I wrote it off because of summer league. Then at the scrimmage before the season started I saw him play for awhile cause DMC was out. Same thing no real hustle no fire. Heooked like he was in way over his head. I know he is young in his career but just my opinion he looks lost. I was surprised how he was bullied around in the scrimmage game.
He mopes on the court. That’s just my lame opinion. I wouldn’t be surprised if he isn’t in the league after his rookie expires.

As far as the question goes
I am still happy with Keith Smart, while it’s not showing in the W’s column yet the team is making pretty decent progress. The word progress alone makes me like Smart still, because under Westphal there was zero progress. No one got better. Smart has lit a fire under Cousins and it hasn’t left yet. I was worried that this would be a temporary thing. Sort of like when you get a new job, you act 100% professional and then after a few weeks you go back to your old bad habits. Cousins is becoming everything we hoped for and more. Smart also has Tyreke playing better. He’s moving the ball better and his defensive lapses are becoming less often. There are glimpses where you can see a bright future between the two.
HeuristicLineup - February 19, 2012
Coach Smart did not light a fire under Cousins
Cousins already had a fire. The former coached just threatened to extinguish it, with aimless coaching and a dysfunctional personality.
bench_blob - February 19, 2012
He just stoked the fire a lil bit.

Lack of defense
The problem is that for many Kings players, their desire to score is greater than their desire to win.
KingsFan - February 19, 2012
I disagree on this assessment of our defense.
I think Kings are trying on Defense, but still lack cohesiveness as a team on that side of the court. This is evident of their constant ball watching, leaving 3pt guys consistently, bigs in bad positions in pick and rolls, etc.
Cohesiveness comes by having two things, a solid defensive system, and playing together on the court. Both of these take time to happen. Having a veteran leader to help communication will speed this up, and the Hayes signing was supposed to address this. But because of his injury, it hasn’t really happened yet.
Wonderchild - February 19, 2012
Had to take another look at that highlight clip of Cousins' dunk on Jonas...
Just noticed that right after Cousins did the dunk, he took one step over to his left to be in Jonas’ path then made body contact with Jonas for emphasis. Subtle but made a message.

Slam_Dunk - February 19, 2012
The Kings will not have a "good" coach until they win. How else to judge a coach but by that standard.
We can compare Smart to Westphal as they had essentially the same rosters. Their win totals are not appreciably different – the results are equally miserable.
It is not enough proof that the Kings just plain need more talent but it is a strong argument. Without wins, simple numbers for some, expected numbers for most – coaches labeled as “good” become unacceptable (“they players don’t listen to him (anymore)”). It is most telling when looking at Coach of the Year winners, once they reach impressive heights the inability to have their teams maintain those levels turns geniuses to bums.
As for Coach Smart and his rotational roulette: The man was hired to replace a coach who had become “unplayerable” (the antonym of uncoachable), and to win games. He is not winning many games. My guess is that he has an incentive in his payment contract that will bonus him on season wins. To find wins he is trying to find a group that he can consistently rely on. His ingredients: 2 rookies, 2 star potential players younger than the rookies and veterans with names like Salmons, Outlaw, Garcia and let’s throw in an injured Chuck Hayes. The Maloofs have your back dude, no worries!
The best thing, IMO, that Coach Smart can accomplish this season is to guide the maturation of DeMarcus Cousins, Tyreke Evans and the rookies Fredette, Thomas and Honeycutt. Well, the guy has done just that. Look at Aykis’ PotW, this kid has shown to be a monster – is there a young big man playing better? Evans is a work in progress no doubt but he has begun to show some much needed diversity in his game. He may be struggling with change but he is listening to direction (watch any game and see Coach Smart shouting from the sidelines to him). As for the rookies, I can’t (and won’t) argue his guidance there.
Overall, Smart has been a huge positive given the roster he has to work with.
betweentheeyes - February 19, 2012
Rec'd for coining the word "unplayerable" for a coach whose players no longer listen to him.
Slam_Dunk - February 19, 2012
I too believed that Smart is handicapped by the need to win to extend his contract.
But, unlike Westphal, Smart has been open and forthcoming about his plans. He’s identified the teams weakness at defending & running the fast break, and fixed it. Not entirely, but enough to notice a difference. He talked about working with Tyreke on identifying zones and players on the floor before he attacks, and we’ve seen a marked improvement in Tyreke’s assists and assist locations (more around the rim). He’s talked about the interior defense and we’ve seen improvement against teams like Portland that rely heavily on scoring from their frontline. And, most recently, Smarts talked about getting the reserves together at the end of practices and creating plays for them.
And, while the reserves haven’t shown a huge jump in improvement, based on the difference in the level of talent between the starters and reserves, a huge jump is probably expecting too much too soon.
I for one am impressed with Smarts ability to identify the problems that he can address quickly, and then implements the changes. And, as there have been a lot of changes, I’m not surprised or disappointed by the players lapses from game to game. As to his rotations, I’m not privy to the inner workings of the team or the inner relationships between the players. So, I’m guessing that his efforts to build a ‘family’ within the group, does play into some of his decisions. Therefore, I won’t attempt to 2nd guess every decision he makes.
But, based on the true feeling of respect, that the GS players and Lin showed toward him this season, I’d say he’s doing the right things toward building a family within our young group.
The Maloofs are public opinion conscious owners, and if the players are happy and the public likes Smarts open and honest demeanor, I don’t see them not picking up his option. I think only new ownership or a new GM, would pose a problem for Smarts continued presence on the bench. I don’t think Smart is worried about wins, and will continue to do what he thinks is best for the team. His future in the NBA is guaranteed regardless to what happens with the KIngs this season. The fact the he might not be able to undo the damage done to this team over the last 2 years, in 60 games is no reflection on his ability. The Maloofs should pick up his option today.

The Malindas are still paying Westphal
They will pick up Smart based on $ more than results. As such, I don’t see them committing to any salary obligations until they have to. They won’t extend Keith Smart now.
As for new ownership – one can only pray. If that means no Keith Smart I could easily live with that. Saying that, new ownership will most likely keep present F.O. and coaching until they assess what they have and what they need to do.
We agree on Coach Smart – he is making the two best assets on the roster, Cousins and Evans better. That alone makes his current performance a winner.

"assess what they have and what they need"
I suggest selling out for a real SF, if they can find a decent one available.

All excellent points, HT
When the team isn’t winning, it is easy to forget the things that Smart is doing. He is a transparent enough coach to reveal to the public the sorts of things he is working on with his team. You are astute in recalling all of his past comments and connecting them to the improvements which have translated on the floor. A big plus for him is the relationship he has built with his players, as evidenced by the obvious respect (and affection) they show for him. So, we know our guys are in good hands. As long as there continues to be improvement, the wins will come.
I do think he is a little bit worried about wins, because they provide some validation to the work he has done with the team and they do help to provide greater assurance he will return next year as the team’s coach. Everyone enjoys success.
