The Kings announced that Hassan Whiteside has been recalled from the D-League's Reno Bighorns. He'll be back in advance of Saturday's game against the Golden State Warriors.
He played 19 minutes a game in 11 games for Reno, averaging 7.8 points, 6.5 rebounds and 3 blocks. Yep, 33 blocks in 209 minutes, or one every six minutes and 20 seconds of playing time.

Just got back from the movies. Wish I took your warning. Btw, Haywire is good. Feels like an 80s Kill Bill.
SPTSJUNKIE - February 4, 2012
I like it
He needs to get in the Keith Smart running & rebounding treatment, as well as some nba defense lessons. I know he’s been somewhat of a disaster, but you always have to wait on big men.
Citadel 29 - February 3, 2012
I like it too.
He may not be ready for big minutes, but he can block shots, something our other bigs don’t do well. Why not give him some spot minutes and see how he pairs with Cousins? Keith Smart might be just what he needs.

6 game win streak HERE WE COME!
Shizzo - February 3, 2012
Unrelated, but are you sh*ttng me Jones?
bench_blob - February 3, 2012
I have no problem with players using hard work to get into rotations.
I think the reality is setting in for Jimmer that to get into games, he needs to show it on the practice floor. That is a good thing.
Citadel 29 - February 3, 2012
Outlaw has a PER of 4.5 and is shooting 26%...
but you like he is awarded spot in rotation based on his play in practice? Sorry thats bullshit. He shouldn’t be guaranteed two seconds of playing time. Outlaw hasn’t earned anything, including a dime of his paycheck. At least Jimmer has shown us glimpses, and improvement of late. Outlaw was $12 million flushed down the drain.
bench_blob - February 3, 2012
Fire Smart!
kinglet - February 3, 2012
I really like Coach Smart so far...
I think Jason Jones is misreporting more than Coach Smart has made definitive decision to include Outlaw in rotation indefinitely.
bench_blob - February 3, 2012
I doubt Jason is misreporting
Aykis16 - February 3, 2012
Well maybe "misreporting" is too strong of word...
But likely taken out of context that Coach Smart intended…which was Outlaw is trying, showed something somehow in practice, and so Coach Smart is giving him a chance. But his game performance thus far has been abysmal, which is ultimately all that counts, so he should absolutely not have stranglehold on any playing time. To pretend this guy has not been horrible is foolish.
bench_blob - February 3, 2012
I like Smart also
He’s definitely smarter than me, and he’s also a lot smarter than the commenters here. I just couldn’t resist taking part in the extreme overreaction.
kinglet - February 3, 2012
I'm not sure what evidence you're using to support your claim that Jimmer isn't "showing it" on the practice floor?
We are talking about the same guy who was scolded by us all for being “too nice” and passing too much at the beginning of the season? I just have trouble buying in to the opinion that he’s not putting in the effort. His defense may be really bad, but I’ve never seen him jogging or not trying. Maybe you’re just talking about his performance in practice, not his effort. I think he’s a slave to whatever learning curve is going to be required for him to learn something else besides shooting. I guarantee he doesn’t have a superiority complex. I think he’s scared shitless that he’s in the NBA and working his ass off to prove to others and himself that he can make it there. I wish he did have a little bit bigger of a complex, and a little swagger and confidence.
feelgood - February 4, 2012
I think you are right
The over-the-top hyperventilating extremes of opinions on Jimmer are mostly speculation and prejudice, based on a perfect storm of: much publicized rookie; narrow but intriguing skill set; still raw rookie; not NBA ready; still learning rookie; clean-cut religious background; overdone expectations. Oh, and he’s a rookie who has played only 21 NBA games. After his first DNP, he suddenly is on the trade block, in the coache’s doghouse, and ready to be cut or traded for a 2080 2nd round pick. Either that, or he is the real rookie of the year who just needs better coaching or playing time to show who he really is. What he really is, is a rookie that has the potential to someday be a good NBA player. That usually takes a few years to find out though.
kinglet - February 4, 2012
Is there such a thing as smart failing?
HarveySpecter - February 3, 2012
This is strange all around
There is a rotation and outlaw somehow belongs in it? But jimmer has obviously been passed on a depth chart (since you know, IT actually plays ahead of him) but then he hasn’t because there is no depth chart for rookies?
That was at least the second game I’ve seen where outlaw got way more run than he should have because other people happened to be playing well be while hes in. correlation =/= causation keith…. That dunk he tried was pretty nice tho

LightningStrike5 - February 3, 2012
Strange time to bring him back.
I thought that they might when Chuck got hurt, but now that we’re at full strength?
Hassan missed the 1st 2 games of the recent road trip to the NE with a DNP-CD. and, he only averaged 15 mpg in the last 2 games.
So, is this the end of his D-League career? Or will he return after the All-Star Break. After all he is the BigHorns backup center and they are in a playoff race.
Are they just bring him back for the long Eastern roadtrip and because they’ll need another practice body during the All-Star Break.
HighTops - February 3, 2012
It is strange timing
I don’t see many back-up D-league centers being ready for the NBA, especially this one.
kinglet - February 3, 2012
Maybe they want to try him instead of Hickson?
Who knows. I doubt that happens.
Aykis16 - February 3, 2012
Actually this makes a little sense.
Hickson has been pretty ineffective besides put backs around the rim. Whiteside can at least do that and play a little better defense.
sac_faithful - February 3, 2012
I think that Hickson is just starting to realize his role
Give him some time…his role is to hustle, rebound and give us a couple put backs every game. The only reason IMO that he has been less than effective is because he has been trying to do too much. He’s getting 6 rebounds a game, not bad in limited minutes.
khoganso - February 4, 2012
I think it has to do with the fact that the Kings have more off-days now, so more time to practice with the team.
Wonderchild - February 4, 2012
Sweet.
I hope he plays a lot…when we are up by 20 in the 4th. Not in favor of giving minutes away just as we start seeing (not turning) the corner. Probably good for practice considering the block show camby had last night.

I bet after Tyreke and DMC got SWATTED in the paint 20 times by Camby...
Coach Smart wants to have a “goaltender” type player at practice to use as some sort of teaching tool. With DMC and JT playing so well as of late, Hayes coming back in the rotation and JJ being… well…. JJ… clearly there is no room for Whiteside in the rotation.
ridingthebench - February 3, 2012
Clearly.

KingsFanInPortland - February 3, 2012 via mobile
Not even kidding
I go to BYU and had someone try to tell me that Jimmer was a lock for the rookie of the year, and they were dead serious. Their rationale was “well everyone knows he’s a really good play and has a lot of potential.” SMH. And second off I’m sick of this situation: “No I’m not a Jazz fan, I’m a King’s fan.” “Oh, because of Jimmer, right?” It’s seriously impossible for some people to understand a) That I liked the kings pre-jimmer and I will like them post-jimmer and b) that he’s not the best player in the NBA
amiles2233 - February 4, 2012
Don't forget C...
c) Dude, you go to BYU. What did you expect? There’s no hero’s or public figures for them to go crazy about besides Jimmer, so of course he’s vaulted into a legendary stratosphere of worship that not even The Jimmer can live up to. Since Kings games are not often broadcast in Utah, I’m assuming most BYU students aren’t even aware with how bad he has been playing. It’s just much easier to ignorantly assume his still consensus best player on earth. (I went to BYU for 2 years, so I feel your pain!)
haglnuts - February 4, 2012
Yeah I know
you probably know how most BYU students don’t understand sports that well (sitting in the student section of football and bball games drives me crazy sometimes, if ANYTHING is called against BYU, even a legit foul, the fans go crazy). A lot of these people’s only exposure to basketball was Jimmer so they can’t understand why he doesn’t just go down and score 30 every game. I just wanted to vent the absurdity of it all here.
amiles2233 - February 4, 2012
That's the ironic thing though isn't it?!
Most BYU fans jumped on the Jimmer bandwagon to thrust him into Godlike status without the sporting IQ to fully understand how what he did at BYU was really unique and special. It’s more like they just wanted someone to worship and he was the flavor of the week. I’m sure Jimmer will be fine when he gets his rythm, but I’m with you BYU fans drive me crazy… I’ll NEVER be a UTE fan though. haha
haglnuts - February 4, 2012

Let’s get one thing straight now. I’ve never been a fan of this sorry franchise and never will be. They’ve never won a championship and never will. i’ll watch my Giants Sunday go for their 4th Super Bowl in five tries. Win or lose that team has the character of a winning franchise. I’ve said this before though, I give you Kings fans a lot of credit. Anyone who can stay loyal to this dysfunctional organization tryly deserves credit. Bankers Hours
Ever since you’ve joined the site, the one thing you’ve done is consistently be negative towards this team, and only advocate how great Jimmer is. Most of us like Jimmer, and we want to see him do well, because he is a Kings player. But this site is a site for Kings fans, and while we have welcomed a bunch of fans from Jimmer’s enormous fanbase, I don’t appreciate when someone like you comes in and just bashes the rest of the team and the organization, simply because Jimmer isn’t living up to your expectations or getting the playing time you want.
To top it all off, you start a Jimmer playing time argument in a post on Hassan Whiteside being recalled from the D-League, despite there being a huge conversation about Jimmer in the post-game thread. You then completely bash the team that we root and cheer for every day:

Jimmer sat out one game. I don’t doubt that it was specifically intended to be that way before the game even started. BUT, so what? I for one expect a head coach to impose discipline however he needs to do so, and for reasons only he and the rest of the staff are going to be aware of. Jimmer has an agent to talk to if this were to become a regular occurrence. I hope he does get time on the floor, and I have always wanted to see him “spell” Evans at times when both he and IT would be on the floor at the same time. It might be quite interesting to see both of them running full tilt full time at the same time….

It seems to me that Smart rotates the big men to a much greater degree than he does with the 1-2-3 positions. Of course there are exceptions, but I think he might see a few minutes of time occasionally, but certainly on his first night back
ExPFCWintergreen - February 3, 2012

andy sims - February 3, 2012
As you all know, I think he can be a good player in this league
But I also think he could be out of a job by this time next year. The concerns that caused him to drop in the draft are valid.
Aykis16 - February 3, 2012
Hassan in my crystal ball
I see Hassan sitting on the bench getting the team oranges and juice boxes. Then when his number is called once every 10 games for 3 minutes he will come in and be awesome. The fans will call for him to get more playing time and he will be loved and adored by the fans. Then next year when the fans are really excited to see him he will ride the bench harder and longer. The fans will cry “WE WANT WHITESIDE” and he will get no playing time. He will then be traded and land a starting role with some expansion team and hang 40 points 10 Rebounds 30 Assist on us every night he comes to Sacramento.
I heard some where if you dont learn from your mistakes you are doom to repeat them

blknblu - February 3, 2012
As a current BYU student/fan....
and a lifelong kings fan (Born & raised in sacramento), please don’t assume that ALL BYU fans that support Jimmer are rockin’ his jock. I was so pumped when Jimmer got drafted by the Kings. That meant that I would still be able to root for a guy I cheered for, for four years, along with my favorite team. That being said, it is quite obvious that I.T. has out played Jimmer thus far in this young season. I am firm believer in earning your time on the court & I hope Jimmer can do that. I cheer when he does well. I cheer more when my team wins.
Any “new” Kings fans that have joined the fold with the addition of Jimmer, don’t let your fandom for him blind you from the fact that he is not the best player on this team. Give him time. He will adapt. That what he did at BYU.
Also, we have Hassan Whiteside back… so dont worry about anything. He’s got this.

I go to BYU as well
me and some work friends discussed this, the issue is that a lot of BYU student’s only exposure to basketball was Jimmer, they just hopped on Jimmer-mania and honestly they can’t really be blamed for that, the energy around campus was amazing. With their only exposure to basketball being Jimmer last year, that’s how they expect basketball to go: Jimmer scoring a lot. It hurts BYU basketball this year (why don’t they just shoot it like Jimmer did?) AND Jimmer this year (why doesn’t he just score 30 points?). These people honestly just don’t understand the game of basketball and it really doesn’t make sense to them that Jimmer isn’t scoring 30 a game (see my post above about talking to a kid who was 100% convinced Jimmer would win ROY). People might freak out because he didn’t play, but I honestly bet those people stop following basketball within a year

You are so right on with that assessment...
also, I think it’s safe to say that Michelle isn’t one of those Jimmer fans.

Stoked Whiteside is back in town
I think Smart might have a better chance at accelerating Whiteside’s apparent immaturity. The younger players seemed to not have the proper respect for Westphal – perhaps deservingly so – but Smart seems to have gleaned the respect of the entire squad. There is only so long we can keep playing some of the Kings that only make meaningful contributions part of the time. Since we are in last place, we might as well build with our youth and give them minutes. Time is running out for Garcia and Greene to prove themselves as small forwards on this team, and next time we are down by 30 in the fourth quarter, we can give Swat some minutes.

You know, a deranged fanbase with a keyboard is a little like the mule with the spinning wheel. No one knows how he got it and danged if he knows how to use it.
Well sir, there’s nothing on Earth like a genuine, bona-fide, electrified, six-car monorail! What’d I say?
“Jimmer starting for the Bulls!”
What’s it called?
“Garcia as backup shooting guard!”
Aw, it’s not for you. It’s more of a Los Angeles idea.
Y’all are JimmerJihadis™. Talk about off the rails…

Look, it’s up there!

You should probably stay off the Blazers Edge too.
I read your comments of there and that was BS. Most of the blogs on SB are good reads and everyone is respectful, so please keep that in mind and don’t give Kings fans a bad rap.

I just saw where NBA.com ranked Isaiah Thomas #9 and Jimmer #10 !!
Way to Go!!

Whiteside
Maybe he can be the anti Jimmer. Whereas one is a black hole on defense, the other can be our black hole on offense! Sounds legitimate.

Jimmer DNP-CD was not a big deal, and I said so
But I swear the mocking and reaction to the Jimmer “Fan Boys” is twice as strong as the supposed over-enthused, irrational Jimmermaniacs. Where is this mighty contingent of unbridled, unhinged supporters posting incessantly on this site and steering the conversation inappropriately?
They don’t really exist. They trickle into threads now and again, but it makes for diversity of opinion that doesn’t hurt anyone.
There’s a few random lurkers here and there with mostly good intentions where Jimmer and the Kings are concerned, that then gets disproportionately magnified by a select group of frequent posters who seem to be eager to be condescending towards those who eagerly want to see Jimmer succeed, with an almost indirect swipe at Jimmer himself.
For those obviously out of logic, there’s a saying about “not feeding the troll”, because it perpetuates what you wish or hope would go away. This wisdom is disregarded by aforementioned group.
I personally felt Scirriro raised a valid question in the post game thread as to why Outlaw got minutes over Jimmer. We should be able to have these types of discussions without assuming the poster is a mindless Jimmer adoring loon.
Obviously Jimmer has the type of game that gets people excited.
He can launch threes in your face from unlimited spots, and get can on a streak in which he makes it look really easy, like we saw vs. the Spurs. He can pile up points in bunches and torch the twine. This is what hyped fans or so-called “fan-boys”, a condescending term that implies ignorance, are responding to.
The most exciting play in basketball besides a thunder jam is a three point swish. I would rank them 1 and 1A in terms of what sets fans off. So deriding fans for natural reaction to a guy who can generate enthusiasm based on his natural style of play is bit unwarranted.
I personally invite all the so-called or self-proclaimed Jimmer “fan boys”, with half to more of their wits about them, to post more frequently. Your exuberant visionary view, at risk of being mildly irrational, is refreshing and welcome in my book. :)
Jimmertime!

On one hand I salute you for addressing it
on the other hand, if you are going to keep generalizing yourself it doesn’t help much
wallywagon11 - February 4, 2012
So I suppose the same thing would apply to those mocking JT fan boys?
Charlieb - February 4, 2012
...
With this statement I agree, but I have yet to encounter a forum (either lurking, or a member) where this wasn’t the case, so it is to be expected when participating in an online community. Perhaps it is human nature to talk down to people when sheltered by anonymity and our computers—I don’t know.
I too am for the “Jimmermaniacs” to post here more often, but I’m also for those who choose to use a more condescending tone to speak up. The more perspectives I read, the better I understand the Kings and the Kings’ fan base (I most certainly enjoy your take on the Xs and Os of basketball).
The more the merrier—or so it is said—just so long as threads don’t frequently get derailed; it could cause Mr. 214 to suffer a stroke from cleaning up the messes left behind. Personally, I’d rather have him spending his time writing here instead of swinging his hammer.
I’ve rambled long enough.

Hasaan Whiteside could end up stealing away some of Honeycutt's minutes...
DiegoKing - February 4, 2012
Honeycutt only has 8 minutes total all season
so I hope Whiteside gets more than just some of those minutes. It may be that Smart wants both of them to practice with the big team so they can learn from the coaches and teammates.
kinglet - February 4, 2012
That is four times the experience of Whitseside - for a total of ten minutes. I have just the thing for them
